Planes…TRAINS….and Automobiles…and sometimes Ships

Not sure how I became a train fan. I know as a kid I would watch the freight trains go by in certain areas when we were traveling, and count the cars (occupy a child in a car anyway you can---especially decades ago…)

Movies probably influenced it such as Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Silver Streak (1979---I loved Gene Wilder), and The Harvey Girls (1946). A number of others from the 30’s and 40’s---no I was not alive then, but watched the movies of that time with Mom and fell in love with them.

Just in case you missed the last edition, here is a link to it for you

Watching the Olympics?

Two things that may sound familiar, especially if you ever were in my CMP class:

The Medalists are stepping “on the podium”. One of the things we talk about is that the podium is what you step on, not what you step behind.

In the NBC sign off they always mention that is owned by NBC and “retransmission is not allowed”. So the story I tell about the hotel saying “Sure! We can just patch the Olympics/Superbowl/World Cup into a meeting room for you to have a party” is illegal…..
Things That Interest Me...and Maybe You (Trains)

I love to see historic train stations whenever I travel…I have been to 8 of these. So many other beautiful ones…one of my favorites is in Grafton, WV (pictured above)…but that is a story for another day.

14 Most Beautiful Train Stations in the U.S.
See how many of these train stations you have been to or plan a visit to some of them.
I have never ridden a train outside of the US, but many of those are on my list. I have ridden them more than the average person in the US. Longest has been Atlanta to NYC , and Jacksonville to Boston. Yes Amtrak is not what we see in other countries. On the other hand you will see that ridership has picked up a lot, the government is finally going to help financially as they do airlines and airports, and there will be more of a push due to being more environmentally friendly in many circumstances.

Amtrak Updates

There are many advantages of taking the train I found, and with improvements, and more private lines being built this will hopefully become something that is used in the US. International guests are always amazed how poor our system is compared to theirs.
I learned to put nearest train station on my meetings and events, whether it by NJ Transit, MBTA or Amtrak. Do you?

Amtrak's new train fleet promises all the bells, whistles. Here's what riders can expect.

Trains and Sustainability

This new hotel on rails wants to entice travelers to take a train ride over a flight
A train ride from Paris to Rome can take 13 hours, while a direct flight is just a little over two hours. But if you could make the journey overnight in a private sleeper car with a private bathroom—and easy access to a cozy bar if you don’t feel like sleeping—you might choose the experience over flying.
