Building More Than a Bridge:

Tour of the Gateway Bridge and SAME Meeting

The recent Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) tour of the Bettendorf Gateway Bridge offered more than a behind-the-scenes look at an impressive infrastructure project. It provided a reminder that every lasting accomplishment begins long before the first beam is lifted into place.

A bridge begins with a vision.

It requires planners, engineers, environmental studies, funding partners, contractors, suppliers, elected officials, and countless hours of collaboration before construction ever begins. The finished bridge is what we see, but its strength comes from the framework built long before the public ever crosses it.

The same can be said of a strong STEM community.

Students don't discover careers by accident. Workforce development doesn't begin at graduation. Innovation doesn't happen in isolation. Like the Gateway Bridge, it is built through planning, partnerships, shared expertise, and people working toward a common purpose.

For more than sixty years, the Quad City Engineering & Science Council has served as one of those places where connections are made. Founded by representatives from multiple engineering and technical societies who believed they could accomplish more together than separately, QCESC has provided opportunities to share information, celebrate achievements, support STEM education, and encourage collaboration throughout the Quad Cities.

Our member societies form an important part of that framework. They bring together professionals who mentor, volunteer, solve problems, and share their knowledge. Our business partners and sponsors invest in both today's workforce and tomorrow's innovators. Educators help students discover possibilities they may never have imagined, while students and young professionals bring fresh ideas and curiosity that will shape the future of our region.

QCESC's role has never been to replace those organizations. Rather, it has been to help create opportunities for them to connect with one another.

Programs such as FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge, scholarships, STEM recognition, professional development, networking opportunities, and conversations between industry and education are all examples of how those connections can grow. As QCESC continues to explore future opportunities with its member societies and community partners, we remain committed to fostering dialogue and encouraging collaboration across our regional STEM community.

The Gateway Bridge doesn't connect two different communities. It strengthens one community by making it easier, safer, and more accessible for people to reach one another. Perhaps that is an appropriate way to think about QCESC as well.

Not as the destination, but as part of the infrastructure that helps ideas, opportunities, organizations, and people move throughout our STEM community. When connections are strengthened, possibilities grow. And like any well-designed bridge, the greatest measure of success is not the structure itself, but the opportunities it helps people reach.
