The Town of Qualicum Beach held its Inaugural Meeting last night, with a strong public turnout to warmly welcome Mayor Adam Walker and Councillors Mischa Oak, Scott Harrison and Anne Skipsey. Councillor-elect Donald Couzens, who was unable to attend, will be sworn in before the November 18 Regular Council Meeting.
Piper Neil Wesmacott led the procession, followed by RCMP Staff Sergeant Travis Decoene. Chief Michael Recalma offered welcoming remarks on behalf of Qualicum First Nation, and the new Town Crier, Jim Purdon, performed his first official cry. Eva Simpson led the singing of the national anthem and the Honorable Judge Brian Harvey presided over Mayor and Council as they swore oaths of office to faithfully lead and serve the people of Qualicum Beach. Council then conducted its first official business, including confirming Council appointments.
In his Inaugural Address, Mayor Walker thanked outgoing Mayor Teunis Westbroek for his thirty years of service and dedication to the Town, leading attendees in a standing ovation. He also expressed his commitment to ensuring that each Council member’s voice and perspective is heard and emphasized the importance of working as a team. He thanked his wife and daughters for their support and the sacrifices they have made to enable him to fulfil his duties as Mayor.
Councillors Harrison, Oak and Skipsey also shared messages of thanks to their families and expressed their desire to serve the community. Councillor Donald Couzens relayed his regrets and expressed an eagerness to begin work upon his return.
Mayor Walker and staff presented outgoing Mayor, Teunis Westbroek and outgoing Councillors Petronella Vander Valk and Jean Young with gifts of appreciation for their service to the Town. A public reception with appetizers and refreshments was hosted by the Town, which provided an opportunity for the public to meet the newly sworn-in Council.
