Happy New Year to you and Happy Birthday to TIDE!

Five years ago I launched TIDE…

I emailed the deck to Pranjul Srivastava, Constance Sng, and Tingting Peng.

Within minutes, Tingting emailed back around 5 AM and said she would support it.

A few minutes later, Constance responded and said she would also support.

An hour goes by and no response from PJ.

Then two hours…nothing.

But then a few minutes after 7 AM, PJ finally responds - he’s in!

It’s still a mystery what PJ was doing between 5 AM and 7 AM. 😜

But it’s no mystery that TIDE couldn’t have done it without the early support of PJ, Constance, Tingting, and many others who continue to support us year after year.

A wholehearted thank you to everyone who has been part of our amazing journey. We look forward to celebrating our Fifth Anniversary with you at TIDE SPARK 2025.

Cheers! 🥂🍾

Maryland State Retirement and Pension System codifies emerging manager program into investment policy

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension System has officially incorporated its long-running Emerging Manager Program into its investment policy, reinforcing its commitment to fostering diversity in asset management.

“A program this large and of this duration should be included in the investment policy manual,” Chief Investment Officer Andrew Palmer stated in a Nov. 19 memorandum to the board.

Maryland Treasurer and Board Chair Dereck Davis emphasized the significance of the move: “This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring that small and diverse asset management firms play a lasting and impactful role in managing the state’s retirement portfolio. It drives value for our beneficiaries while fostering greater equity within the investment landscape.”

Executive Director Martin Noven highlighted the unique advantages the program provides: “Our long-standing commitment to diversity represents the best of both worlds. We gain access to unique investment opportunities with insightful, emerging managers who might otherwise be overlooked, while cultivating the next generation of investors.”

Time for a more inclusive definition of diversity — why we should leverage socioeconomic data in hiring decision-making

Yours truly and Tom Brigandi, CFA was featured on P&I as we make the case for why the financial services industry should broaden its standard DEI metrics and how to do so.

The article explains how the Pell grant status as well as first generation college status could be adopted to broaden existing standard DEI metrics.

Should we adopt these metrics within the hiring process? Let me know your thoughts!
