An October Report--and Vote!

Dear Friends:

Happy October! While I’m not happy about the passing of warm—and bike riding—weather, I so look forward to spending the holidays with my new granddaughter for the first time! Hooray for that! (I’ve already bought her a very cool present for Xmas!)

Much has happened since you heard from me last: among other things, I took a short trip to Cape Cod and Provincetown, where I was able to sit on beaches on three different days. Boy, do I just love the Cape and its wonderful ocean waves!

I also engaged in some mission work, which I detail in Thoughts below. Additionally, I’m in the midst of running for reelection to my local school board which, unfortunately, has produced some personal attacks. One candidate has slurred me (using a very transphobic phrase) and the local GOP has attacked me for having the audacity to weekly protest the Trump administration and its fascism on a downtown Chaska street corner.

I fully expect the naysaying to continue and frankly I don’t know how things will go come November 3. Still, I’m undaunted and will continue showing up to advocate for the school district’s wonderful students, educators and administrators!

And here we are two weeks before what many (including me) believe will be the most important election in American history. I hope all of you have registered to vote and that come election day, you will have gone to the polls one way or another. We simply cannot take two more years of this crap!

I’ll talk to you on the other side of the election. In the meantime, please know that I care about you!

This Month's Thoughts

Thought No. 1: My recent mission work to make the world better for all humans has included presenting to two Minnesota governmental agencies and then speaking at the La Crescent MN Public Library where I talked about my first book, Getting to Ellen (the library later hosted two meetings to discuss the book). After speaking in La Crescent, I travelled to Cedar Rapids where I spoke at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church—once to workshop Gray Area Thinking® and the next day to talk about how being transgender isn’t a “choice.” They were so welcoming at the church! And just today, via Zoom I was on a panel of transgender lawyers hosted by the New York State Unified Court System; the topic was challenges around being transgender (either as a lawyer or as a litigant/defendant) in courtroom settings.

Thought No. 2: Longtime Ripple readers will recall that I wrote a monthly column for Lavender Magazine for a decade until 2022, when I resigned in protest over a new policy mandating that I couldn’t pen anything political, and instead could only write about “life and leisure.” Well, Lavender abruptly folded this past June and alumni from the magazine decided to start a brand-new LGBTQ+-focused publication. Thus, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be writing monthly for Q Minnesota, a lovely publication that’s several steps above Lavender in quality. Here’s a link to my first column! Please subscribe to Q MN!

Thought No. 3: On my way to Cedar Rapids earlier in the month, I stopped in Decorah, Iowa, which had the entire main drag decked out in Pride flags (just by chance, it was Pride weekend!). While in town, I stumbled upon an incredible artist-owned store named “Story People.” Ellen and her son Matthew and their colleagues create wonderful art and spectacular greeting cards with uplifting messages of hope and support— I was brought to tears by some of the messages. Check out their website here and consider ordering something!

Thought No. 4:  Just to give you a sense of the serenity I experienced on Cape Cod, above is a morning picture I snapped on Head of the Meadow beach just south of Provincetown. I’ve decided that I will go back to Ptown annually as long as I’m physically able; there is just something about the ocean that grounds me like nothing else!

Thought No. 5: Next week will be my last speaking engagement until late January. The Trump administration’s anti-DEI crusade has devastated my ability to stand in rooms to advocate for compassion and kindness for all humans. It’s all so sad! Thankfully, I still have my radio show, The Illegal Trans Woman (now airing in four cities), and the Q MN column. I just have to hope that someday things will turn around, and that I’ll still be here to reengage. We shall see.

Final Thought:  Last month, I tried to launch a “Good Hearts” Project: As I eplained then, this newsletter is intended to be about how humans are good to each other. I comb the internet for stories of compassion and kindness, but I also would like to offer stories from my readers. I had asked you to send along stories of kindness toward other humans or youself, but no one responded! Darn! Before I give up, I'm putting this out here one more time. Do I have any takers? Email me at elliejkrug@gmail.com and we will go from there! Thanks!

Compassion

We have new and old acts of compassion, as well as many examples from the animal world. New: check out this story of an AZ teen who gave a struggling senior his shoes, and who later befriended “Mr. Roy,” which included launching a GoFundMe for him (it’s raised $28K toward a $30K goal!). Old: there’s revisiting this story from 20 years ago re: Jason McElwain and compassion on a basketball team—“J-Mac” went on to write a book and speak about autism (see his Wiki page here). We also have a three-year-old CBS piece (back when CBS had integrity) about MN elementary school students who raised $300K to create an adaptive playground for classmates who were wheelchair users. On the animal side, see this video of a pup helping a fawn escape a swimming pool and this clip of turtles congregating to help another turtle that was caught in some grating. We’ve also got donkey compassion in two different ways (click here and here) and this touching (watch till the end) piece about compassion for a chimp. All good stuff!

Mission

See this delightful story of how the love of two dads helped mold a very cool human! Then see this extremely powerful anti-war, anti-terrorism video from the International Committee of the Red Cross. There’s also wonderful rap poetry by a South Sudan poet, “Leyley the Poet.” And in case you forgot how cool the Canadians are, see this video of two Milton, Ontario mayoral candidates getting along. I’ve also got JFK talking about the value of the arts—I so miss the old days! Finally, I stumbled upon an older NPR piece in which I was interviewed with WAPO columnist Gene Weingarten about his book, One Day, which contains a chapter about what happened on the day of my thirtieth birthday and life thereafter.

Pain

Once more, there’s too much pain, and I’m just not going to share it other than this Erin Reed piece about how the Alabama GOP chair recently slurred two transgender folks running for seats in that state's legislature. God.

Relief

It’s October, so of course you’ll get this clip of a lab jumping into leaf piles. We’ve also got a Golden pup discovering a new toy, along with this video of seals being released to the ocean. And wow, get a load of this very demanding baby beaver—so adorable! Lastly, see this pup's homecoming reception for a service member!

Support/

Allyship

See this video by a fearless mother of a transgender daughter—if the parent of every trans kid could be so loving! I also have the powerful example of allyship (along with bravery, compassion, and just plain guts) in the actions of Rev. Dr. Michael Woolf at Broadview IL. And I don’t know if you’ve ever caught the comedian/social commentator Josh Johnson, but for sure check out this clip of him talking about current issues!

Lastly, several of you have recently donated to Human Ripple Works, Inc., the nonprofit which makes it possible for me to do more work for organizations that lack budgets for training (like talking to Gender and Sexuality Alliances at various schools across the country). Thank you for that! If you’d like to support this work, please click here on the HRW website. Thanks!

Finally....

The Ripple is a work in progress, so please, I welcome your suggestions and comments! Please share this newsletter with others, too!

Please consider reading my books, Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change; and Being Ellen: A Second Chance at Life if possible, order them through your local bookstore. And, if your book club reads my book, I'm happy to come for the discussion via Zoom!

Thank you for helping to make the world a better place! I'm at your side, cheering you on, I promise! Please have compassion for yourself and for others.
