Stantec to design next phase of Toronto’s basement flooding protection program
The City of Toronto has selected Stantec to provide engineering services for phase 5 of the basement flooding protection program (BFPP). This multi-year program, which began in 2006, helps reduce the risk of flooding through improvements to the sewer system and overland drainage routes, which can face increased pressure with heavy rainfalls.
For the latest phase of the BFPP, Stantec will design and implement storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and storage sewer projects to help protect the basements of residents’ homes from major flood impacts.

Construction sector contributes to national employment gains

Construction gains were concentrated in specialty trade contractors, a segment that rose by 4,800 workers, which included 2,800 additional building equipment contractors. This industry recorded its fifth consecutive monthly payroll employment gain in June.

To celebrate the topping off milestone, PCL Construction, other project partners, and the trades workforce signed a beam earlier this summer before it was lifted into place at the top of the building.

In Pathways indicators for registered apprentices in Canada, 2021, which the agency released this week, the annual change in certification rates trended to flat or positive in the construction-related trades.

Geoff Smith’s next mission: digitization
Former EllisDon CEO Geoff Smith, now installed as the firm’s executive chair, recently told delegates attending the Building Transformations conference in Toronto his next goal, his singular focus, is to spearhead the firm’s adoption of digital strategies.
He is adamant firms in the sector have to transform themselves, Smith said during an Aug. 23 presentation. Digitization is such a priority for him that colleagues jokingly suggest he is overdoing it.

Constructors strategize to harness new health and safety tech
Health and safety directors in the construction sector are adopting new technology at a rapid pace but as delegates heard during a recent session at the Building Transformations conference held in Toronto, the next generation of tech promises even greater breakthroughs. Three panellists and moderator Dr. Joel Moody, Ontario’s chief prevention officer, suggested there is a large gap between laggards who hesitate to use the latest safety technology and those who embrace it.
