Educate. Enrich. Enhance. Engage.

Nonprofit Organizations are the Foundation

of Every Community.

Nonprofits cannot be political.

UNLESS they have a separate 501c3 Political Action Organization or Committee (PAC). Read that again.

Per the IRS: Among other provisions, this legislation specifically amended IRC Section 527(j) to require the e-filing of Form 8872, Political Organization Report of Contributions & Expenditures, for periods beginning on or after January 1, 2020. Political parties; campaign committees for candidates for federal, state or local office; and political action committees are all political organizations under IRC § 527.

Among other requirements, most tax-exempt political organizations have a requirement to file periodic reports on Form 8872 with the IRS. To file electronically, the organization must have the username and password it received from the IRS after electronically filing its initial notice (Form 8871). Use the “Political Organization Filing and Disclosure”

Running a PAC is not always an easy venture. There is additional reporting needed and it is closely monitored.

Let's look at the other side of PAC's. Without a PAC, nonprofit organizations (that are not set-up as political organizations) canNOT be political - no endorsing candidates, no sending money to candidates, no preaching from the pulpit, just NO.

There is also this:

JOHNSON AMENDMENT.

501(c)(3) or 501(c)6 nonprofit organizations from endorsing or opposing political candidates.

The Johnson Amendment is an addition, adopted in 1954, to the Internal Revenue Code, 501(c)(3).  As a condition for maintaining exception from income taxes and other taxes, charitable organizations including churches and affiliated groups, were forbidden from participating or intervening in “any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office” (Davidson 1998, 17).

The amendment is named after then Senator (later President) Lyndon B. Johnson.

Even though "they" have tried to remove this tax code, it is STILL in effect. And I, for one, believe it should STAY right where it is. After all, there are enough blabber mouths out there being political. Let them do it and YOU stay true to your mission.

No matter what you do, say, endorse, support, etc., you will be distancing your nonprofit from at least half of the members, donors, and patrons. Why do it? To fulfill your own needs? It certainly does NOT fulfill your supporter's needs. It is a stupid thing to do. There. I've said it.

NONPROFIT INTRODUCTION

CHICAGO VETERAN'S HOME

The Veterans’ Home at Chicago

The Illinois Veterans' Home at Chicago welcomed its first residents in January 2022. Situated on Chicago's northwest side, the home offers 200 private rooms with baths. Its open floor plan creates community around pods of living and dining spaces. The home accommodates veterans seeking skilled nursing and memory care.

Amenities: Residents have access to a library, barber shop, bank, and a rehabilitation center. Housekeeping, laundry, and dietary ensure the residents day-to-day personal needs are met. An IDVA Veterans Service Officer is available to assist the veteran with questions regarding state and federal benefits.

Gathering Spaces: Outdoor areas include a lushly planted garden with a walking path and benches, and a garden terrace. The multi-purpose room is the gathering place for events and family occasions.

Joy of Care: Local artist Indira Johnson created custom, interactive artwork for every floor themed, "Helping Hands," to reflect the commitment of each medical professional and staff caring for their resident veterans.

I am fortunate to work with this Veteran's Home. Our Veteran's deserve to be well taken care of, well fed, and respected. Every one of them.
