Dear Carlene,

From local community health practice to the pinnacles of the nonprofit, corporate, and government worlds, Douglas Brooks has literally moved the needle to mitigate inequities in health outcomes both domestically and internationally.

Early in his career, he served as a case manager and program coordinator for the Provincetown AIDS Support Group before joining Justice Resource Center as a social work clinician and eventually serving as Senior Vice President for Community, Health, and Public Policy.  He managed a community health center, a congregate and assisted-living housing services program and developed prevention care and treatment for LGBTQ+ youth. Brooks also marshalled resources in the business sphere as the Vice President, Advancing Black Equity and Community Engagement at Gilead Sciences, where he led an enterprise-wide strategic framework to tackle systemic issues of structural anti-Black racism and health-based inequities.

Notably Brooks served as Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) in the Obama Administration, building on a long career of addressing HIV/AIDS and sharpening the focus on the populations most affected by HIV —including gay and bisexual men, Black and Latino communities, Black women, transgender people, and people living in the Southern U.S. As director, he supported the widespread scale-up of PrEP, and included this in the updated strategy as a key way to reduce new infections in the U.S.

It is our deepest honor to recognize Douglas for his enormous contributions to the public health field.  For being on the forefront of work to address HIV/AIDS. And for always being ready and willing to issue a clarion call, as did Paul Revere, that compels us to take action for the greater good.

I invite you to attend the MPHA 2024 Spring Awards Breakfast on June 7th at the Artists for Humanity Epicenter to help us honor Douglas Brooks and this year’s other awardees.

Get your early bird tickets today before April 24!
