LAGUNA BLANCA STUDENTS HOST TEDx CONFERENCE IN SANTA BARBARA
|
|
By Patricia Martellotti, KEYT News
Laguna Blanca School gave the community a chance to experience its fifth annual TEDx event on February 1. "TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool is an independently organized event where we collect 15 speakers from around our community with incredible ideas to share with our student audience and our Santa Barbara community," said Lead TEDx Teacher Allison Armstrong.
But TEDx didn’t happen overnight. Students worked tirelessly for months to make it happen.
"I was on the business development team," said TEDx Student JJ Stone '26. "I helped budget, fundraise, and talk to sponsors."
"Over 16 weeks, I have learned a lot about TED and communication skills, how to work in a professional environment and really lead my peers in the best way I can," said TEDx Student and Co-Executive Producer Danica Damiani '24.

SOCK CLUB STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SB POINT-IN-TIME COUNT
|
|
By Molly Morouse '23
Last Wednesday, January 25, students rose at dawn to participate in the annual nationwide Point-In-Time count, a snapshot census that tracks the number, demographics, and needs of people experiencing homelessness around the country. A group of ten Laguna students embarked at 5AM from Christ Presbyterian Church to the Santa Barbara Waterfront, their designated area for Santa Barbara.
Students returned from the morning transformed. Natalie Schweitzer '25 explains, “What I didn’t expect was my totally altered viewpoint on not only the importance of the census but also of the people we were talking to.” Both the students and the leadership felt connected to our community and each other more than ever.
Hearing stories from these vulnerable community members reminded them of the importance of connection. Most individuals were eager to have someone listen to them, a privilege that is often taken for granted. One student remarked that the experience helped her “cross a mental barrier” that she hadn’t realized she possessed.

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY HERITAGE MONTH
|
|
A great way to celebrate and acknowledge Black History Month is by reading literature with Black representation and learning about some notable Black people.
We have chosen four books to recommend for each division. We hope you can either check them out from our school library or purchase them and add them to your own library. Diversifying our libraries and literature is important when we are learning about the world we live in, where we come from, and the different people and cultures we will interact with.
Happy reading!
Ursula Chan and Anna Alldredge

LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL TERM
|
|
Congratulations to Kora, Annabelle, Jacob, and Izzie for completing a fantastic second term of leadership on our Lower School Student Council! The purpose of the Lower School Student Council is to add another inclusive leadership opportunity for our Lower School students, specifically for our fourth grade “seniors” on campus. Serving on Student Council also helps our Owls hone their leadership skills as part of our school’s programming. All fourth graders serve in this capacity, rotating in terms throughout the year.
Our current council leaders Kora, Annabelle, Jacob, and Izzie partnered with the Sock Club on a successful Warm Things Drive. They also supported Upper School with the creation of the LS video that was featured at our TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool event. In addition, they launched a system for collecting and distributing food scraps to our campus chickens. And finally, they designed and created a beautiful Magnet Wall sign for our playspace, in partnership with our STEM coordinator Ms. Tuttle.
Bravo to Kora, Annabelle, Jacob, and Izzie for their strong leadership!
