Greetings from C. Darby Ulery, founder of "Let's Go! Fairhope," events-related newsletter, calendar and website resource for Fairhope, Alabama.
Municipal elections are this Tuesday, August 26. Make time to vote. Some handy resources are available here:
We don't endorse anyone here, but we welcome events-related news and we appreciate our community members - including but not limited to some of the candidates - who pay to help provide this local information resource.
Our community's hearts go out to the Gambino family regarding the loss of Gabriella Grace Gambino (1997-2025). Gatherings / services were held last week, and a public celebration of life is scheduled this Tuesday 6 PM at Gambino's Italian Grill.
We promoted the The Ravenite Pizzeria's "Drink Pink" fundraising efforts here, and wanted to share a message from the restaurant's social media page. Fairhope Elks Lodge No. 1879 has announced they are giving away 1 free bingo card for every two laundry items (see specific items in the graphic under "Wednesday" below) to help local women and children at the Baldwin Family Village.
Baldwin Family Village held a donor appreciation dinner last Thursday. In a phone call with the shelter Tuesday morning, Let's Go! Fairhope learned there are currently 85 names on the waiting list here in Fairhope. At the risk of losing our Realtors and readers at City Hall, here's more:
The term unhoused is preferred over "homeless," and efforts are being made to educate the community that an overly-common misconception is that mental illness, drug use, and simply not wanting to work are root causes.
A more modern, more inclusive truth reflects it can happen to smart, educated, careful former homeowners, retired police officers, fire fighters, and teachers who have called our community home for many years. It happens to people who have never done drugs, aren't battling mental illness, and never missed a payment before losing a spouse, experiencing an increase in expenses, or becoming chronically ill after a virus or accident. These are just some examples.
Some work full time, but aren't able to make ends meet. Others don't meet criteria for certain services and fall through the cracks. It isn't always new people moving to the area hoping to stay. I am not proud to admit I once thought there were plenty of options for anyone in need. I was wrong.
The desire to slow growth and avoid multi-family developments in the name of preserving Fairhope is an interesting one. No one wants to see Fairhope turn into New York City on the Bay. This issue isn't specific to Fairhope, but it's perhaps ironic that Fairhope was founded on a "fair hope of success" towards ending the problem of poverty.
If you'd like to learn more about the founding of Fairhope, visit the Fairhope Museum of History or Fairhope Single Tax Corporation online archives.
If your organization is doing anything to help individuals and families in need, please reply. Would love to give you a shout.
