Wise Words

“This land is your land, this land is my land…this land was made for you and me”

~Woody Guthrie

This Sunday, November 8, we kick off our TBS Film Series with Dust Bowls and Jewish Souls, a documentary exploring the unique relationship between the legendary singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie and his Jewish mother-in-law, the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt. Watching their creative and cultural influence on one another unfold is truly fascinating.

Lines from Guthrie’s most famous song—“This land is your land, this land is my land”—resonated deeply this week as Americans from all corners of the country went to the polls. For so many people in this country, it hasn’t always felt like “this land is my land.” For some, that uncertainty still holds true today. And the Jewish people certainly know a thing or two about what it means to be a stranger in a strange land.

The three films in this year’s series reflect three different moments in the 20th-century Jewish-American experience, showing how an immigrant people learned to carve out a place and a home for themselves. Here’s hoping that as we watch these stories together, we find a renewed sense of connection, empathy, and shared belonging in the place we call home.

Shabbat shalom,

Robin

Climate Salon @ TBS

Monday, November 9th, 6:00pm - 7:00pm

"Climate, Data Centers and (Jewish) Resilience"

As rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) fuels an unprecedented surge in data center construction, costs are increasingly borne by the public. Soaring electricity demand, higher utility bills, water consumption and quality, unbearable sound pollution, mounting pressure on climate goals and infrastructure. Communities grapple with an industry growing faster than the policies designed to govern it.

Our panel will explore these challenges from three perspectives:

TBS member Andy Ratzkin, environmental and energy sector lawyer, and former member of the Hastings Conservation Commission, will lead us through thought experiments on the climate cost / benefit balance of data center build outs.

Linda Moot, TBS Organizer and author of an occasional e-newsletter, will review NY State laws and the advocacy role of RAC-NY (Religious Action Center).

Rabbi Daniel Reiser will add spiritual and Jewish perspective to balance our support for community well-being.
