NCCP Coach Education Opportunities

Coach Education is important because coaches are community leaders who can inspire passion for sport and physical activity. Having trained coaches contributes to a quality sport experience. Participating in coach education can significantly increase a coach’s confidence in their abilities. Individuals can enhance skills, improve performance, and increase their value to their athletes and organization. Coach Education also helps us create a safe sport environment as proper training helps people recognize maltreatment and prevent or address it.

As we approach the introduction of Minimum Field Hockey Coach Certification Standards, we encourage coaches to take advantage of current subsidies and upcoming opportunities.

Remembering Community Field Hockey Pioneer, Pat Hall

It is with great sadness that the field hockey community mourns the loss of a pioneer of our sport, Pat Hall. Pat passed away peacefully with her family on September 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Her celebration of life will be held Monday November 13, 2 p.m. at Mary Winspear, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney, B.C.

While Pat has won many accolades over the past seven decades, in recent years she has been a recurring name crossing the stage. In 2020, Pat was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame for her decades of contributions to both field hockey and softball. Pat was then honoured at the Greater Victoria Sports Awards return to the local stage in 2022, as the organizing committee presented an award in her name, the Pat Hall Volunteer Award. Just this past Fall of 2023, Field Hockey Canada then announced Pat as a member of their 2023 FHC Hall of Fame as a builder.

Pat’s list of contributions is endless. In addition to her many years as player, coach and umpire, Pat served on the executive of the Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association (VILFHA) for over 40 years. She has been Victoria or BC representative with Field Hockey BC, Field Hockey Canada, the Vancouver Island Umpires Association and the Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association.

She was honoured four times with VILFHA’s most prestigious award, the Christine Trophy, for combining sportsmanship, service and playing ability. She was also honoured by Field Hockey BC with the Barbara Schrodt Award (for those who have made a significant difference to the sport across BC), the Gold Pin Volunteer Award, and the Sport BC President’s Award. In 1983, Pat was named Victoria Sports Person of the Year. In 1993, she was awarded with VILFHA Life Membership and, in 2013, the VILFHA introduced the Pat Hall Officials Development Award, held within the Field Hockey BC Foundation.

If you would like to contribute to the Pat Hall Officials Development Award, visit:

Standing on the shoulders of pioneering giants, Field Hockey BC will be forever grateful for Pat’s contributions to the sport and the stage she set for field hockey players, coaches, and officials for years to come. A lovely lady who is already sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to Pat’s family at this difficult time.

“Thank You Pat”

FHBC Staff News

It is a great pleasure to welcome Julie Brereton to the FHBC Staff Team as the Society’s new Member Services Coordinator. Julie brings a considerable amount of field hockey knowledge and experience to the team; knowledge and experience that I am sure will bring an immediate and lasting benefit to both community participants and the club membership.

Julie's field hockey experience started at the junior levels as a player 30 years ago. She spent time in the high performance program and was a member of several BC provincial teams over the years. A talent for umpiring was also noticed at a young age and she was encouraged to start umpiring as a teenager. Julie currently holds a Regional umpire rating and has current plans to work towards her Canadian rating. Feels that one is never too old to keep improving! Julie has also spent time in coaching, most significantly at the club level with Burnaby Lake Field Hockey Club for both junior and adult teams.

On the administrative side, Julie has spent time as the President of both the SFU Field Hockey Club and the Burnaby Lake Field Hockey Club, as well as the Umpire Coordinator for the Vancouver Women’s Field Hockey Association.

Outside of field hockey, Julie enjoys cycling, running, anything outdoors really. Prior to working at Field Hockey BC, Julie spent 18 years working in the financial industry.

Please join us in welcoming Julie who can be reached via e-mail or phone at info@fieldhockeybc.com /604-737-3146. Welcome Julie!

Andrea Gibson appointed as Field Hockey Canada's NextGen Director

Field Hockey BC is pleased to recognize Andrea Gibson, and congratulate her on her appointment as Field Hockey Canada’s NextGen Director. Andrea has been involved in coaching in British Columbia for over a decade, both at a club and provincial level. Her list of contributions is endless, including coaching in the Field Hockey BC Regional and Provincial programs, as well as the Schools Program just to name a few. She has also been a Technical Director at the club level for many years, an Evaluator for the Field Hockey BC Talent Identification & Pathway Program and a Learning Facilitator for the Field Hockey BC Coach Education program. Her dedication and commitment to the local field hockey community does not go unnoticed, and we wish her nothing but the best as she takes on her new role of NextGen Director with Field Hockey Canada.
