Message from Meryl Nason, President

Lech Lecha: Answering the Call

One of the joys of the annual Torah cycle is that each time we return to a parashah, we discover something new about ourselves. This week, as we read Parashat Lech Lecha, I find myself reflecting not only on Abraham's journey, but also on a family milestone: Lech Lecha was my son's Bar Mitzvah parashah.

The portion begins with God's call to Abram: "Lech lecha... Go forth from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house to the land that I will show you." (Genesis 12:1). Abram is asked to step into an uncertain future with faith and courage, trusting that he is being guided toward purpose and blessing. The phrase "Lech Lecha" is often understood as "go forth" or "go for yourself," suggesting a journey that is both outward and inward. [chabad.org], [promptparsha.com]

As parents, we experience our own version of Lech Lecha when our children reach milestones that signal their growth toward independence. I remember watching my son stand at the bimah, chanting these words and sharing their meaning. At the time, I focused on his achievement and the pride our family felt. Years later, I appreciate the deeper lesson. Just as Abraham was called to leave what was familiar and embrace the unknown, our children are continually called to take new steps into adulthood, and we are called to let them.

The message of Lech Lecha resonates far beyond family life. It speaks to all of us as leaders, volunteers, and members of our Sisterhoods and congregations. We are often invited to leave our comfort zones, accept new responsibilities, build new relationships, and envision new possibilities. Like Abraham, we may not always know where the journey will lead, but growth rarely comes from standing still.

In WLCJ and throughout the IntraContinental Region, I see women answering their own calls to "go forth" every day. They step into leadership positions, mentor others, strengthen Jewish life, and create communities of belonging and purpose. Their willingness to embrace new opportunities ensures that our movement remains vibrant and strong.

As we read Lech Lecha this week, may we find the courage to take the next step on our own journeys. And may we continue to encourage the generations that follow us as they find their paths, guided by faith, tradition, and the enduring promise of possibility.

Shabbat Shalom,

Meryl

Spotlight: Brith Shalom Sisterhood Kick-off Brunch

This past Sunday CBS Sisterhood held their annual Kick-off Brunch. The event was held at the home of Vice President Ana Korngold. Immediate past president, Jessica Hassid, introduced the new sisterhood President Ronith Hochman and Vice Presidents Ana Korngold and Sefra Perkins.

The leadership team enthusiastically shared their programming plans for the upcoming year. Torah Fund Chairwoman Shelley Nadel articulated the purpose of the Torah Fund Campaign, its history, and how donations may be made.

Spotlight: 28th Annual Rummage Sale at Agudas Achim

Agudas Achim in San Antonio is having our 28th Annual Rummage Sale next week. The sale kicks off with an afternoon sale for Friends and Family members, followed by 2 full days that are open to the public. We expect 100’s of customers over the 2 day sale. This is our big fundraiser of the year, and yes it’s a lot of work but we enjoy being together and working as a team! Proceeds of the sale go towards Sisterhood events and kiddish lunches.

Spotlight: Tifereth Israel Torah Fund Tea

OUR TORAH FUN(D) TEA

In our mother’s hats and white gloves, our Torah Fund Tea was held on Sunday afternoon (a perfect time for a tea party) October 11, 2026 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Des Moines, Iowa.

Around six tables of “petite bouches”, we nibbled on scones, cucumber rounds, various bars and sipped tea. Our Tea Lady, Pat Peterson, spoke about her tea travels, cited special books and recipes. We learned how to select, steep and enjoy tea, and

she answered our many questions.

Torah Fund pins were distributed to our generous donors. We were pleased to have raised almost $7000.00 for the very important work that Torah Fund supports.

Torah Fund Update

A personal Reflection

As we enter the fall season, our alma maters are very proactively reaching out to me and to my husband to make donations to help provide student scholarships. My husband and I remember how essential it was for us to receive scholarship money to be able to afford our college education. Our degrees were the steppingstones which enabled us to enter into our professions. We feel compelled to give back to our universities and are honored to be able to do so.

I feel equally compelled to donate to the Torah Fund. My personal Jewish journey is filled with ongoing learning and study. I value my synagogue clergy and the Jewish educators who continue to motivate me to expand my knowledge. I wish to create the same opportunities and steppingstones for our emerging Jewish professionals that were created for me.

We continue to make meaningful progress in our Shema Koleinu Torah Fund Campaign. Women’s League has raised just under $500,000 towards our 2026-2027 international goal of $1,200,000. Our ICR Region has presently contributed nearly $35,000 towards this total. I wish to personally thank each sisterhood and each donor for your generosity and commitment to this campaign.

To see how our donations personally impact our future clergy, see the program below.

Join us for a special program highlighting the impact of the Torah Fund campaign through the stories of four rabbinical students from The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, and The Schechter Institutes of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem.

Each student will share their personal journey to rabbinical school and how scholarships have helped make that journey possible. The program will conclude with a moderated question-and-answer session.
