I want to thank everyone who watched from home last weekend as we dedicated Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport. It was an amazing event for an amazing Toledoan.
If it has been some time since you have flown from our wonderful airport, please take another look. You can’t beat the speed and convenience of our airport.

I would like to again remind all Toledoans to review the many opportunities we have this summer for our youth. It will all be posted at toledo.oh.gov/summer and in a special 16-page section of The Blade Sunday.
As I announced yesterday, we are still looking for at least eight lifeguards in order to safely open all six city pools and the splash pad at Savage Park.
Right now we will be able to open Navarre Pool, 1001 White St.; Roosevelt Pool, 910 Dorr St., and Pickford Pool, 3000 Medford Dr., on June 1. The hours will be 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. from June 1 to July 4 and 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. from July 5 to Aug. 15. (Roosevelt Pool will be closed on Mondays. Pickford and Navarre pools will be closed on Tuesdays.)
Willys Pool, 1375 Hillcrest Ave., will open on June 7 if the current class of lifeguards successfully completes certification.
Anyone interested in becoming a lifeguard for the city this summer (the certification process is free) should go to toledo.oh.gov.pools.

Happy Birthday Dr. Maloney
|
|
Finally, I would like to wish a very happy 100th birthday to Toledoan Dr. Tom Maloney, a World War II veteran and one of the last living Iwo Jima survivors.
It was an honor to be among the many who participated in a birthday parade past his home, and to present him with a proclamation on behalf of all Toledoans.

The Toledo Mud Hens are teaming up with the City of Toledo to host the first-ever PLAY BALL event at Fifth Third Field on Sunday, June 6. The event is part of an ongoing effort to build connections between baseball and the Toledo community.
|

The event is in conjunction with Major League Baseball's PLAY BALL program, whose mission is to encourage young people and communities to engage in baseball or softball-related activities. PLAY BALL events demonstrate the positive way the game can serve as an outlet for physical activity, fun with friends, and learning how to play the sport at its most basic level.
The event is open to any baseball or softball novice aged 5 to 12 years old. Each session features five skill stations for participants to learn baseball fundamentals. All children will receive a free PLAY BALL branded bat and ball set to take home. Participants must register in advance.

Metro Toledo and Newark, N.J. improved access to local parks and other natural areas more than any other large cities except Baltimore during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the results of a national study released Thursday. Toledo’s rapid one-year climb up the Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore index, from 77th in 2020 to 50th place in 2021, was buoyed largely by Metroparks Toledo’s huge investments along the Maumee River with its Glass City Metropark and the plans it is making for its future, five-mile Glass City Riverwalk along both sides of the river, two TPL officials involved with the study’s release said.
A Toledo man celebrated a century around the sun with family, friends and even complete strangers Wednesday night. There was an amazing celebration for Dr. Tom Maloney’s 100 years of life. Hundreds drove by in cars and on motorcycles, while others filled the front lawn and lined the street to honor Dr. Maloney. Steve Engel is a Navy veteran with the American Legion Post in Ida, Michigan, and he was part of planning the party.
