Learning, Leading, and Looking Ahead

The 2025 RCCA National Conference in Union, Missouri, brought together rural educators, presidents, trustees, and partners for three days

of shared purpose and inspiration. The sessions

and conversations reaffirmed what we already know to be true - rural colleges are innovative, resilient, and deeply connected to the people and places they serve.

This year’s presentations reflected the breadth and depth of that work. Attendees explored how data storytelling can elevate advocacy, how artificial intelligence is reshaping student success, and how mentorship and workforce partnerships are creating new pathways for rural learners. Discussions on leadership, faculty engagement, policy governance, and grant development highlighted the creativity and collaboration driving our sector forward. From AI in the classroom to “grow your own” leadership programs and community-driven workforce initiatives, the conference showcased rural excellence in action.

As we look ahead, RCCA’s Alliance Learning Series will continue that momentum throughout the year. Launching later this month, the series offers monthly online sessions designed to build capacity and foster collaboration among rural-serving colleges. Topics will include strengthening institutional partnerships, understanding community impact, building future-focused campuses, supporting student success through data and mentoring, and effective marketing and outreach for rural institutions. Each session will deliver practical insights and strategies that participants can take back to their campuses and put to use immediately.

The Alliance Learning Series isn’t just professional development. It’s an ongoing dialogue among peers who share a commitment to advancing rural education. It’s an opportunity to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and stay connected between conferences.

I encourage every RCCA member to take advantage of these sessions as part of your college’s professional development plan.

TCUs Generate $3.8 Billion for Rural America as New National Study Shows Broad Economic and Workforce Impact

Across rural America, Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) serve as dynamic engines of local prosperity, workforce development, and community stability.

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), which represents 34 TCUs nationwide, has released a landmark national economic impact study showing just how vital these institutions are to Native communities and to the economies of some of the country’s most remote regions.

Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) Supports America’s Economic Edge

In today’s changing economy, workers with only a high school diploma often cannot earn enough to support a family. By 2031, 72 percent of jobs will require postsecondary education or training beyond high school, according to Georgetown Center for Education and the Workforce.

Community college is a path to success for workers, and it's essential to our nation’s economic competitiveness. Community college graduates earn more than $400,000 more over their lifetimes than high school graduates. Today, more than half of students in postsecondary education are the first in their families to attend college (first-gen), so they can’t always turn to parents for guidance on choosing classes, visiting professors' office hours, or paying for college.
