As you have probably already heard, there is VS in Texas and New Mexico currently which may affect your travel to Canada. There were two cases last week and if those clear up and no new cases are presented, it may not be a problem, but I know some of you might not want to take a chance.
There is an option for you to move horses out of Texas or New Mexico for 21 clear days (not including travel) prior to crossing the border in Canada. I asked for specific recommendations from the CFIA border vet and here is what she sent me:
"As far as CFIA is concerned we require the horses be in an area free of vs for 21 days. If they are in any other state for the 21 days before coming they fall under that state (and only need a coggins). (except new mexico thank you piroplasmsosis!)
The accredited vet who is doing up their health papers – it is their responsibility to ensure they are signing papers for
horses that have been out of a vs state for 21 days.
I often recommend that owners contact the vet they are going to use and see if they require a drive by hello my horses are here (out of Texas), a vet visit to show proof they are there or a phone call….each vet will be different.
Because of what happened a few years a go with vs moving to a few states it is always good that exhibitors know that if they move to North Dakota for example vs could hit North Dakota as well within that 21 days so there is no guarantee!!!"
For those of you going to Youth Nationals, there will be enough room to layover horses going to Canada there, you would just be responsible for a stall fee. The stalls may not be with the rest of your Youth Nationals stalls, but we will do our best to accommodate you.
We spoke with the facility, and will allow you to stay after Youth before you leave for Canada. Please let me know what your plans are and I will help you out. You will not need an import permit if you move out of Texas for 21 days.
Please pass this along to anyone else with questions, I’m happy to help you as well. My cell phone number is listed below.
