June 2026 Newsletter

I hope you are well! :)

Father's Day is a few weeks away and I wish a fantastic day to all you dads and pet dads. That same day is also the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. Wishing you a lovely summer season.

June is National Iced Tea Month. Every year I dedicate this month's newsletter to iced tea making techniques and tips; however, I decided that I have nothing new to add this year. I think it's important that you have the information so that you can prepare your own fresh iced tea all summer long, especially for those of you who are new to my community or for those of you who would like a refresh on the info. This information is always posted under the Newsletters section in my online shop at https://www.pleasuresoftea.com and here is a link to last year's newsletter. And speaking of summer....don't forget that summer teas are in, including the recently added Blueberry Lemon White Tea. Returning seasonal favorites are listed below and are available in the online shop.

This month we are going to continue our travels through tea-producing countries and we are moving on to the continent of Africa. Here we'll be visiting the Satemwa Estate, which is located in the country of Malawi. This visit coincides with the discontinuation of the Satemwa Estate Bvumbwe Handmade Treasure Black Tea and the reintroduction of the Satemwa Estate Thyolo Black Tea, a tea that I offered in my menu many years ago.

Thank you for all who have been putting updates in the Comments section when placing your orders. I love to hear about what's new in your lives, so please continue to share! :)

As always, I appreciate your continued support of my small business!! :)

Teas of Satemwa Estate

Almost ten years ago I introduced an assortment of teas from the Satemwa Estate. Over the years the selection of teas from this estate grew and, more recently, has reduced a little due to more limited availability. These are wonderful teas and still being able to offer many teas from the same garden provide a prime opportunity to explore the terroir of a particular location.

Malawi is a long, thin country that is located in the eastern part of Africa and it encircles the majority of Lake Malawi. Tea has been grown in Malawi since the 1880s and it was the first East African country to grow tea commercially. It is currently the second most important tea-producing country after Kenya. Tea is predominantly grown in the southern and western part of the country and most of it is commodity CTC black teas destined for export. The Satemwa Estate is a bright spot that produces the orthodox teas that I am proud to offer.

The Satemwa Estate was established in 1923 by a Scotsman, Maclean Kay, who wanted to grow both tea and coffee. Satemwa is one of the few remaining family-owned tea gardens in the area, as most other gardens have been sold to larger companies looking to produce commodity teas. The estate resides at an elevation of about 3,300 feet in the Shire Highlands, which is a beautiful landscape of plateaus and mountains in the Thyolo District in the southern part of the country. The region benefits from a temperate climate.

The Satemwa Estate is known for producing quality teas. Some of their CTC production teas are included in the blends of famous international brands; however, I am solely interested in their artisanal line of hand-made, orthodox-produced teas. The tea makers have been experimenting and fine-tuning their craft in order to create signature teas that highlight the style and terroir of Malawi. Part of their experimentation includes the use of the various cultivars that are indigenous to the area. These indigenous cultivars are named after various towns in Malawi, which include Bvumbwe, Thyolo, and Zomba. They use this raw leaf material to produce wonderful black, green, wulong, white and dark teas.

Even though I do not offer as expansive a selection of their teas as I used to, the teas I offer from each of the above categories capture the essence of the terroir of the Satemwa Estate. They can be found in the online shop https://www.pleasuresoftea.com. To easily find them, type Satemwa in the search box. Each tea will have a description, along with aromatic and taste profiles. Enjoy your visit to the Satemwa Estate and feel free to share your experience! :)
