From Father Jonathann +

Jesus calls us to repent

This Sunday marks the middle of Lent, and as we continue through the season it is helpful to remember the main theme and purpose of the season. We are taking time to remember the first call of Jesus, what his ministry was all about, repentance.

Mark was the first of the gospels to be written, and in it, Jesus begins his ministry with the proclamation that “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” To repent means to turn from. Jesus calls us to turn from our old ways and believe.

Here in the church, we strive to make everyone feel welcome, but that welcome has a specific purpose. We welcome all that they may have the opportunity to answer the proclamation of Jesus, to repent and believe in the good news. Lent is our yearly reminder of that reality. The point is to encounter Jesus and be transformed as disciples.

We are welcome here, but that is not enough. We are also called by Jesus. We are called to repentance, to turn from all that is not Christ. That is what we seek this Lent. Let us continue that journey together in the week ahead.
