Air Conditioning System Replacement Campaign
To Begin
A Message From:
Church Council President Bill Reich
After more than 30 years of service, three of our seven (7) church air conditioning units must be replaced. Band-aids and quick fixes are not supplying lasting relief. The oldest units control the air flow in our office space and sanctuary. The church office unit was down completely as of July 14th. One sanctuary unit went down on July 21st.
Our ability to worship our God is being impacted. Our ability to provide a welcoming, safe, and healthful place for all people is being impacted.
Everyone knows the sanctuary is used for our weekend worship, but large events also use this space. The Grace Place graduation and Vacation Bible School (VBS) are two of the most recent events, and let us not forget weddings and funerals.
Our church office is the center of activity at our church. The worship materials are created weekly in this space, and member phone calls regarding loved ones are received and processed. Our nursery is included in the impacted area.
After discussing the hardships that the lack of air conditioning creates, after hearing the impacts to people and ministry that the lack of air conditioning causes, after understanding that our church does not have appropriate money on hand, your church council has decided that an "Air Conditioning Campaign" must begin immediately.
Your donations of any size to this air conditioning campaign, which are above and beyond what you pledged to the church in 2024, will be literally felt by everyone that enters our building. As your donations arrive, we will be able to incrementally replace the failing units. An incremental goal is to receive the first $14,000 by September 8th to pay for the unit that services the office area (activated on July 22nd).
Our ultimate goal is to receive a total of $50,000 by July 31, 2025. Any money received beyond our goal will be used to replace other air conditioning units that the church owns.
Your donations, labeled "Air Conditioning Fund", may be placed into the offering plates. The electronic giving service Tithe.ly (https://tithe.ly/give_new/www/#/tithely/give-one-time/956196) has been recently updated for this new fund. Of course, you may mail your
donations to the church, too.
Thank you for considering this emergent need. Your contributions,
whether it be once, weekly, or monthly, to this campaign will help every
member of our church to worship the God that loves us.

From The Pastor's Desk:
Dear Friends in Christ,
It has been my great joy to serve our congregation as Interim Pastor for the past seven months! Much has been accomplished, and much is yet to come.
When we stop and look around, it’s remarkable how widely and well we serve God, each other, and the community at large - all starting within the confines of our facility here at Lord of Life. Beginning with my first worship as your pastor, I have been determined that worship be joyful and meaningful. I hope that has been your experience too. We come to be in God’s presence intentionally, to encounter the Word of God and to be nourished by that same Word as we speak, sing, listen, and commune. We are fed and strengthened to love and serve the world as God’s people!
Much more ministry is underway:
---We continue to provide for the care and nurture of our congregation through fellowship, caring ministry, and more.
---We have compassion for the world as we provide food for those in need of meals, whether it is to our members or those in the community.
---Our quilting ministry does remarkable and beautiful work.
---A group of adults is serving on a mission trip in Kentucky, supported by our donations.
---Vacation Bible School served 52 children, and comprised over 20 volunteers to do it!
---We work with several other groups to provide the care of Christ in this broken world in many ways.
Your Church Council is hard at work to catch God’s vision for us and to make plans for living into the future God has for us. This includes being prepared to call a full-time pastor for the congregation.
We are making disciples for Christ through our various Bible studies, and our Confirmation Ministry, which is being re-formed and renewed as we keep the promises made in baptism to pass along the faith to a new generation. Our Grace Place Preschool ministry is thriving, and continues to be a significant outreach to our community.
In this brief overview of ministry, I think you can easily see how much, and how meaningfully our facility makes a difference for our congregation, and our community. Now it needs our care so that we can continue to heed God’s call for Lord of Life. As we consider our gift, over and above our regular giving, to replace the aging air conditioners (which have served so well for so long), I ask that we begin with prayer. As we consider our life together as a congregation, we pray with thankfulness for all the ways God is faithful and true. The church facility makes it possible for us live out our faith in the world, and to be God’s people. I am convinced we can accomplish this work and continue to grow together as a family of faith!
Thanks for all the ways you serve God at Lord of Life, and in the world!
Pastor Barry

Lord Of Life
Drive-In Movie Night
Saturday, September 7th
The Garfield Movie
Save The Date! ---- Help Needed!
Hey Lord of Life Family! Yes, I’m writing to you!!!! Hopefully, you’ve saved the date for the evening of September 7th for an outdoor family fun movie night. We will be showing The Garfield Movie. This is for Lord of Life members and will also be an outreach event for inviting nearby communities. The plan is to have a fun filled night for all with popcorn, fellowship, and, hopefully, to introduce neighbors to the Lord of Life family and facilities in a “non-churchy” setting. Does this sound like fun?!?!
Well, your Church Council and the Discipleship, Evangelism, and Communications Committee (DECC) team believes it will be. Synod grant funds have been approved, along with some Thrivent action team funding. Now we need some happy event volunteers to assist with different areas such as giving parking directions, setting up/breaking down, floating support to assist with any emergent items, and likely a building monitor(s) to allow rest room access. We need you to help make this a fun and safe event.
There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex for volunteers. You can also email me, Ed Hourihan, at ejhourihan@verizon.net to volunteer or if you have any questions.

A "Note" From Rick Krause:
Cartoon Christmas Trio Coming To Lord Of Life
It may be the middle of summer, but Lord of Life is already planning for the Christmas season! We will be hosting the Cartoon Christmas Trio for a free concert at the church on Saturday, December 7th. The group plays music from classic Christmas cartoons--especially the music of Vince Guaraldi (the composer of the "Peanuts" soundtracks).
We are in desperate need of children and youth for a choir to sing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and 1 or 2 other Christmas songs. Do you know anyone who might be interested? Please let Rick Krause know ASAP
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Rick Krause. You can see him at church, send him an e-mail, or text/call him at your convenience. (3rick@lordlife.us; (856) 287-5328)

Mission Team Arrives
In Kentucky!
Work Has Begun!
Their bags were packed, and they were ready to go! After an over 600 mile road trip, our Mission Team arrived safely in Harlan, Kentucky. The group is staying at Christ’s Hands facility, which is run by an organization that is similar to the Christian Caring Center in that it feeds the homeless, and houses them in the winter. There are eight other groups from four different states there as well. Many have quite a number of youth in their teams. Along with two other teams, work started on Monday to finish a home. Roofing, fly rafters, facia, soffits, and stairs all have to be built. Please pray for no rain as the weather forecast calls for some rain every day. Fun!!!
The group is in high spirits that the tasks will proceed smoothly and be accomplished by week’s end. Another summary of the trip will appear in the next LifeLines. Our team members are: Lu and Ed Hourihan, Lee Jennings, Tina and Bill Leach, Penny Miller, and Lynn Walsh. We pray for all of you!

Quilt Ministry
Milestone Reached!
Lord of Life Quilters can now boast that they have completed over 1,000 quilts. Quilt Ministry leader Gloria Brosious made the announcement at their July 11th work session.
The Ministry began in 2013, and there were 21 quilts in the first delivery to Lutheran World Relief (LWR). To date, a total of 956 quilts have been donated to LWR. From there, they have been distributed to those in need in at least 20 different countries across the world. At one time, we were able to track the pathway of our Lord of Life quilts from the LWR warehouse in Maryland to the country in which they were distributed. This tracking system is no longer available, but, when it was in operation, our LOL quilts went to 15 different countries.
Besides, LWR, 6 quilts were given to those we helped during our 2023 Mission Trip; 14 quilts and 2 children’s quilts were brought to Fort Dix for distribution to Afghani refugees; and 17 children’s quilts were given to the needy in Brazil.
Since our last quilt donation to LWR in September 2023, we needed to complete 44 more quilts to reach our 1,000th one made. It was verified at the July 11th quilt work session that we have achieved this milestone.
This year’s completed quilts will be blessed on God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday. On September 18th and 19th they will be transported to the collection center at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Vineland.
Thank you to all church members who have joined with us in making these quilts over the past 11 years in which our Ministry has been at work!

Project LOL:
Air Conditioning System Update
One down, one to go, and one getting closer to being a goner! The airconditioner for the church office, nursery, library, and other offices has been replaced. This was the smallest of the original older units that cool parts of our main building. Bids are coming in for the cost to replace a second unit that has expired. This is the one that cools the east side of the Sanctuary. The unit that cools the west side is still working, but is the same age as the two that have failed. We hope that the west unit will continue to work at least through the end of this year's warm season. Photos below show the installation process.

Thank You From MORE Foundation
Recently, Lord of Life sent a full box of old sneakers to MORE. We received the following note back from them:
Dear Friends,
Keeping a running tally of carbon pulled by your trees is our pleasure. Every pair you send us becomes five trees pulling down 5,000 pounds of carbon in 20 years. One pair of used athletic shoes weighing 1.6 pounds pulls down well over 5,000 pounds of carbon in only two decades with 5 trees. And average of 50 pounds a year for each tree.
Your gift of sneakers also feeds millions of people with over a million trees planted by students since January 2023. Most of the trees planted are also food producers. 1/ 3 of all food comes from trees in the tropics.
It is also worth mentioning that we upcycle one pound of plastic waste for every pair of sneakers donated.
We greatly appreciate your continuous support, and please do not hesitate to reach out to us if there's any questions or concerns.
Regards,
Carole Bender | MORE Foundation Group

Book Club
Tuesday, September 10th
Remarkably Bright Creatures
By Shelby Van
Book Club will resume in Septmeber, and this will be our choice to start the new season!
For fans of A Man Called Ove, this is a luminous debut novel about a widow's unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus reluctantly residing at the local aquarium and the truths she finally uncovers about her son's disappearance 30 years ago. Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

Quilters At Work
Thursday, July 11th
Working on a recently donated supply of fabric was the focus of this session. The large pieces of material were cut into squares of the proper size, then ironed and assembled into kits. All are welcome to pick up a kit which will form the upper portion of the quilt. The group wrote and sent a thank you note to the donor of the fabric.

The annual Christmas in July Service was held at both the Saturday evening and Sunday church services. We sang some of our favorite Christmas hymns which were accompanied by the Bell Choir. It was wonderful to hear the church organ playing at at a Sunday service again. Also, our Mission Team received a Pastoral blessing and a show of support from the congregation. Pastor also thanked church members who staffed our Vacation Bible School.

Some Baseball History:
During the month of August, there will be two baseball oriented events at Lord of Life: the tour of Citizen's Bank Park and the BlueClaws game. Keeping with this theme, the link below will take you to a booklet that talks about baseball in its early days during the Civil War. It contains excerpts from a Union soldier's diary and rules of game at that time. Thank you Carol and Pete Fucci for sharing this.

The ending song appears twice in our ELW hymnal as #332 and #611. The tune more familiar to most is the one which is listed as an "English Folk Tune." This hymn was chosen by Living Lutheran Newsletter as its July 2024 Hymn of the Month. The music link begins with some history behind the hymn and a musical introduction. The second link is to the article in Living Lutheran. Enjoy!
