New Member Spotlight:

Camden Opera House

Please join us in welcoming the Camden Opera House to the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce!

A treasured Midcoast landmark, the Camden Opera House has been at the heart of the region's cultural life since opening in 1894. Built following Camden's Great Fire of 1892, the historic venue was once the tallest building in Knox County and has hosted everything from grand operas and traveling theater productions to town meetings, concerts, conferences, films, and community celebrations. Today, the beautifully restored, National Register-listed opera house welcomes more than 28,000 visitors annually and remains one of Maine's premier performing arts venues. The Opera House continues its long tradition of enriching the cultural, social, and economic life of Midcoast Maine through a diverse year-round lineup of performances and events.

We're excited to welcome this iconic institution to our Chamber community and look forward to strengthening connections between our region's vibrant arts, business, and tourism sectors.

EVENTS

Following their widely praised production of Twelfth Night last August, Belfast-based MidCoast Shakespeare Studio is proud to bring (Lady) Macbeth, an original adaptation of the Shakespearean classic, to the Belfast City Park this June. The character of Lady Macbeth is based on a historical figure, but she is only portrayed as the grasping, devious villain of Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth. All of her husband’s sins are laid at her feet, and her story is mostly a cautionary tale about trusting ambitious women. Would we think about her differently if we knew her full story?

If we knew that she was married before, and that after having a son, her first husband was murdered? And many historians believe it was Macbeth who killed her first husband?

We at MidCoast Shakespeare Studio have taken on the challenge of telling a more authentic version of Lady Macbeth’s story. We use Shakespeare’s classic text from Macbeth, along with original elements, and a bit of witchy magic to give Lady Macbeth back her voice. We partner with local musicians and businesses, and bring together theater artists from near and far, to breathe new life into this timeless classic. We hope folks from our local community will come join us as we celebrate Lady Macbeth!

On June 14th, we will partner with the Colonial Theatre in Belfast for a community fundraiser event: An Evening with Lady Macbeth, featuring live performances from our play and a screening of Kurosawa’s adaptation of Macbeth, Throne of Blood. For details, visit: https://colonialtheatre.com/events/

On June 24-28, we invite you to join us for our free performances of (Lady) Macbeth in Belfast City Park. For more information, please visit: www.midcoastshakes.com/events

The Housing and Property Development Committee of Belfast presents:

A Conversation on Housing in Belfast

Join us for an informational presentation on housing in Belfast and the surrounding communities, followed by a discussion. We will be joined by the Maine Council of Governments (MCOG) who will present data on the trends and need for housing in our region. We will look at some examples of housing types and scales and how that fits into our community. Then we will have a discussion about what increased housing could look like in Belfast and how we can align new housing with the goals of the comprehensive plan. Notes from the discussion will help inform the housing committee as it continues its efforts to advocate for housing that meets the current and future housing needs of the community.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on this important topic!
