Wildlife Photo of the Week: Brown Pelican | |
|
Species: Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis)
Location: Lake Babcock
Photographer: John Hutzler
Christina's Take: Insights from Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager & Wildlife Biologist Christina Kontos:
- The brown pelican is a large gray-brown seabird with a yellow head, a long white neck, and a very long bill with a stretchy throat pouch used for capturing fish.
- During the breeding season, adults have red skin on their throats, white plumage on the neck, and their yellow feathers become brighter on their heads.
- Pelicans feed on fish by plunge-diving into waterbodies from a height as great as 50 feet, which stuns small fish by their forceful impact before scooping them up in their throat pouch. During their dives, they tuck their head and rotate their bodies to the left to cushion the trachea and esophagus from impact. Once they capture their prey, they tip their head to drain water from their bill pouch.
- It is important to remember that when fishing, always be sure to collect all fishing lines and hooks as these can tear pelican pouches easily, thus causing them to starve.
- Did you know that pelicans incubate their eggs with the skin of their feet? By standing on the eggs to keep them warm, their eggs must be thick enough to withstand the pressure. During the 1960s and 1970s, brown pelican populations suffered a severe decline due to the effects of DDT, an insecticide, which produced thinner eggs that would crack under the weight of incubating parents. During this tragic time, this beautiful species nearly disappeared; however, it made a full recovery due to pesticide regulations. Today, their main threats include habitat degradation, sea level rise, pollution, and the destruction of coastal wetlands.
- During a flight in large squadrons within their coastal habitats, they glide together on their broad wings while surfing on updrafts, occasionally beating their wings slowly and deeply with powerful grace.
