Watch Those PayPal Billing Statements

The following alert was sent to us by our friend, Capt. Jillian Cabana of the Westport Police Department:

In addition to the very common EZ Pass text message scams that many people have been receiving on their cell phones, we have been seeing a lot of fraudulent PayPal billing emails.

If you have a PayPal account, the email may look legitimate at first glance because it shows the correct logo, an invoice number, and other features. However, on closer look, you will see the email address is from a gmail account. If it was legitimate, it would originate from a PayPal.com email address.

There are also capitalization and address formatting errors, and the customer service number for PayPal is incorrect. The correct customer service number is 1-888-221-1161.

When in doubt, always call the number on your billing statement or look up the proper customer service number online.  Never call the number contained in the email.

Stay vigilant!

And another scam...

The very popular "I need your assistance" scam is making the rounds again. DO NOT respond to the email because it probably goes directly to the scammer. You've certainly seen this one before. Trash it and do not respond.
