Monroe High School's Jordan Young named WSOC-TV Big 22 Player of the Year

UCPS is thrilled to share the exciting news that Jordan Young, a standout athlete from Monroe High School, has been named the WSOC-TV Big 22 Player of the Year! The prestigious award was presented to him by Channel 9's Phil Orban in a ceremony at the school on Thursday, Nov. 16.

In addition, Jordan has become only the third junior to receive this honor, indicating his exceptional ability and dedication. Channel 9's Big 22 Player of the Year is a highly competitive recognition, determined by a combination of rankings from the Channel 9 sports team, a poll from area coaches and votes from enthusiastic fans.

"I feel very blessed to receive this award. Out of 22 players chosen, I am grateful to be the one to come out on top to receive it," said Jordan. "My next goal is to work even harder to be the first person to get it back to back."

Jordan earned a well-deserved trophy, and Principal Shannon Batchelor accepted a $10,000 check for Monroe High School in recognition of this accomplishment. This generous contribution will enhance the school's athletic programs and facilities, making a lasting impact on the community.

Congratulations to Jordan for being named the 2023 WSOC-TV Big 22 Player of the Year. His hard work and dedication have paid off!

Maia Ramirez clinches second consecutive win in UCPS Holiday Card Contest

Congratulations to Maia Ramirez from Marvin Ridge High, who has won the UCPS Holiday Card Contest for the second time. Maia's artwork will again appear on the cover of the holiday card, with her name, grade, and school information displayed on the back.

"I'm surprised to be a two-time winner," said Maia, an 11th grader. "The medium I used was watercolor, which I prefer because it blends out easily. That's what I used last year, too. I designed my card with a snowman looking at a town to symbolize people coming together and to tell people that the holidays are coming."

Wingate Elementary's outdoor classroom sprouts a sense of community

Think of a classroom with a fresh twist – no walls, just the great outdoors. Imagine students swapping their desks for benches and lessons under the open sky. That's the plan at Wingate Elementary, where the school teamed up with Out Teach and Blue Cross NC to turn an unused space behind the building into an exciting outdoor lab and their courtyard into a peaceful haven. It's not just about a change of scenery; it's about engaging in lessons surrounded by nature's wonders, proving that education isn't limited to four walls.

"We are an AgTech School, so it makes sense for us to have a usable, adaptable outdoor environment that enhances academics for all of our students," said Principal Maxie Johnson. "We also want to create zen moments for emotional support so students and teachers can have time to close their eyes, relax and breathe."

Champions of gratitude

Veterans Day was on Nov. 11, and many of our students showed appreciation for our Veterans through meaningful service projects. From volunteering to organizing community events, they've made a real impact. Their efforts highlight a shared commitment to honoring and supporting our nation's heroes. Together, we're building a culture of gratitude in our community thanks to the inspiring contributions of our dedicated students.

Parkwood High's students in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) club hosted the second annual Veterans Day Breakfast for all active and retired military. FFA Officers and members were delighted to sit and visit with local heroes.

Piedmont High School's JROTC Cadets dedicated their evening to serving Veterans at Golden Corral in Monroe. Cadets were honored to play a part in expressing gratitude through their service.
