Necessity Pantry Ingathering tomorrow

Leave donated items in the Narthex

This Sunday is our monthly ingathering for the Necessity Pantry. The pantry provides personal care items for individuals and families in financial stress.

Needed items include shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, shaving cream, bath soap, lotion, deodorant, laundry detergent, toilet paper and feminine hygiene and incontinence products. Cash donations are also gratefully accepted.

The Necessity Pantry is a cooperative ministry supported by the Church of the Resurrection in Blue Springs, St. Anne’s in Lee’s Summit, Trinity and St. Michael’s in Independence, and St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence.

Men's Breakfast next Tuesday

Bring your appetite and join us next Tuesday, August 19, for our monthly Men's Breakfast at the Royal Biscuit on 40 Hwy in Blue Springs, beginning at 7:00 am.

The Royal Biscuit offers a 20% discount on Tuesdays to seniors and military.

International Outreach opportunity

Primero Agua is a nonprofit organization based in Missouri that works to provide clean water to the people of Honduras.

Primero Agua's volunteers drill and maintain water wells in the Honduras with pumps that are powered by solar energy. So far they have completed almost 50 wells, each serving hundreds of people in many different communities.

The Church of the Resurrection has contributed to this organization every year since 2023 as part of our international outreach ministry. We have also been able to increase our donations with an annual grant from The Diocese of West Missouri, which matches donations up to a total of $1,000.

Please consider a donation to Primero Aqua. (Make checks payable to the Church of the Resurrection and note your contribution is for this project on the memo line.)

You can also donate directly online to Primero Aqua (click here). 100% of the funds received by Primero Agua goes to clean water in the Honduras. No one receives a salary and volunteers pay their own travel expenses.

Why Water

A simple hole dug into the ground with a pump and enough pipe to lift the water out of the earth.

A well that provides enough water for families to drink, cook, bathe, and live.

In many parts of the world, dirty water is both the source of sickness and the feeder for continued sickness.

The introduction of available clean water changes living conditions, shrinks children’s swollen stomachs, allows them to go to school and changes lives.

Episcopal Church Terminology

Become an expert

Every Sunday we typically read the Collect of the Day.

What is a Collect? (Pronounced KOL-ekt with emphasize on the first syllable.)

The Collect acts as a focal point for prayer, gathering the congregation's thoughts and prayers into one succinct petition to God, often related to the specific day's themes and readings.

Specifically, a Collect is a short form of prayer in three parts - an address to God, a petition (special request), and a conclusion, followed by Amen - and associated with specific occasions and liturgical seasons.

As an example, here is our collect for this Sunday:

(1) Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life:

(2) Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life;

(3) through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

(4) Amen.

The collects in the Book of Common Prayer are mainly translations by Thomas Cranmer from the Latin prayers for each Sunday of the year. Thomas Cranmer (1489 – 1556) was a theologian, leader of the English Reformation and the Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and, for a short time, Mary I. He is honored as a martyr in the Church of England.

Although the exact origin of the word Collect is unknown, it comes from the Latin word collēcta, which means the gathering of people together. It may have been applied as the name of the prayer said before the procession into the church when Mass was celebrated.
