Sensors for III-V Power Amplifiers

This article presents an overview for the development of GaN and other III-V PAs with built-in temperature and load sensing to monitor reliability and performance factors. Supply voltage can be a significant fraction of the device breakdown voltage. High temperature conditions may be present. Load mismatch and unintended resonances may cause high drain voltage swings. In situ measurement of temperature and load impedance or VSWR allow PA operation with tighter design margins. Temperature sensing techniques developed do not require on-chip device modeling. Multiport reflectometry techniques developed to monitor load impedance introduce no components in the RF path. An all-analogue technique to monitor VSWR requires no substantial computation.

A Compact 249–309 GHz Power Amplifier Using a Four-Conductor Transmission Line Balun

This article presents a two-way four-stage sub-THz power amplifier fabricated in an advanced 130-nm SiGe BiCMOS process with fT/fmax = 470/650 GHz. To achieve compact and broadband performances simultaneously in a sub-THz band, a novel four-conductor subquarter-wavelength transmission line balun is proposed. In addition, the vertical stacking layout reduces the overall size. The sub-THz PA using the proposed techniques exhibits a peak gain of 22 dB, a 3 dB small-signal bandwidth of 60 GHz (249–309 GHz) and a 3 dB saturated power bandwidth of 65 GHz (245–310 GHz). At 275 GHz, a maximum saturated power of 11.5 dBm was measured with a OP1dB of 10.5 dBm and a maximum power-added efficiency of 2.08%. The total core area is only 0.048 mm2 with 306.25 mW/mm2 output power per unit die area, which is the best performance among the reported PAs around 300 GHz.

It’s All About Connections 3.0:

Young Professionals Activities of the

IEEE AP-MTT Joint Benelux Chapter

Building upon the momentum of the “It’s All About Connections” initiative [1], [2], the IEEE Young Professionals (YP) and Industry Professionals (IP) community of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation-Microwave Theory and Technology (AP-MTT) Joint Benelux Chapter continued its mission to connect early-career engineers with academia and industry through a series of engaging, skill-oriented events held during the European Microwave Week (EuMW 2025) at the Jaarbeurs, Utrecht. With the great support of the EuMW 2025 team, especially EuMW 2025 General Chair Prof. Mark Bentum, Operational Officer Dr. David Prinsloo, and Student Activities Chair Prof. Simon Rommel, these activities were made possible and seamlessly integrated into the wider conference program. They were designed to foster professional growth, inspire collaboration, and strengthen the link between design innovation and practical measurement experience, spanning frequencies from megahertz to terahertz in microwave and antenna domains.

Jointly supported by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S), IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S), IEEE AP-MTT Joint Benelux Chapter, IEEE Benelux Section, IEEE YP, and IEEE Foundation, the initiative exemplified the spirit of collaboration between IEEE sections and chapters, reinforcing the importance of mentorship, inclusivity, and cross-disciplinary engagement within the microwave engineering community, values that continue to embody the “Connectivity Matters” narrative championed in earlier “IEEE Society News” contributions.

MTT-S News and Announcements

It’s that time of year!

Do you have an idea for a cool MTT-S t-shirt design?

The IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) is looking for

t-shirt designs to help showcase our society! Win a $500 prize!

This is a great opportunity to be creative! The t-shirt design should embody what it means to be a part of the MTT-S and reflect our tagline “MHz To THz Community”. It can also highlight this year’s IMS2026 theme “Revolutionizing RF” or feature the host city of Boston, MA!

The winning design will be printed as a t-shirt/sticker and distributed at this year’s IEEE International MTT Symposia (IMS2026) in Boston, MA!

Leadless Pacemakers: Past, Present, and Future—A Review of Antennas and Wireless Power and Data Telemetry

The leadless cardiac pacemaker is a revolutionary device for bradycardia patients. It is a single-component, capsule-type implantable medical device that corrects the heart’s electrical function when the heart rate falls below the standard value of 60 beats per minute. The remote monitoring feature enables the leadless pacemaker to monitor bradycardia patients’ heart health, and it is only possible due to the ultra-compact antenna of the implantable leadless pacemaker’s biotelemetry system. This article reviews the leadless pacemaker’s antennas for biotelemetry and power telemetry systems, the importance of intra-cardiac communication for dual-chamber leadless pacemakers, and future requirements of leadless pacemaker antennas.

A 1024-Element Dual-Circularly Polarized Phased-Array Transmitter for Ka-Band SATCOM With Wide-Axial-Ratio Bandwidth and Beamwidth

The large-scale deployment of low-Earth-orbit satellites has created significant commercial opportunities for developing cost-effective satellite communication user terminals. To address the frequency offset and insufficient axial ratio beamwidth at extreme frequencies in conventional transceivers, we propose a dual-circularly polarized phased-array transmitter operating in the SATCOM Ka-band. The radiating antenna elements feature a cavity-loaded dual-layer metasurface architecture, enabling multimode resonance to achieve an extended operating bandwidth and mitigate frequency offset caused by element mutual coupling and manufacturing tolerances. Finally, the 1024-element array, implemented in a scalable single board, demonstrates excellent performance, including a high dual-polarized effective isotropic radiated power of 42 dBW at 29 GHz, a ±60∘ wide-angle scanning, a pretapered sidelobe level below -11 dB, and a cross-polarization discrimination consistently surpassing 20 dB across all planes and scan angles.
