Staff Spotlight on Suzanne Lis Daley

August 2023 through July 2024 has been a year of a lot of change for me. I began my role as Communications Coordinator in August of 2023, so it has been almost a full year aligning with the UCE July-June fiscal year. I now feel more confident having worked through all of the annual calendar events, including the big three: Serendipity Auction, Pledge Drive and Rummage Sale.

Prior to UCE, I have been doing contract work for the last 8 years in web communications for several local small businesses (Play It Again Sports, The Alchemist’s Wife/Follow Your Nose, and the Sentencing Advocacy Group of Evanston). And most recently I maintained and uploaded the library of images used within the popular parking application SpotHero. I enjoyed the work from home benefits, way before the pandemic made it cool. That schedule worked well for me. As a single mom, I had a lot to juggle with twins starting college at once (sadly no university has BOGO options), supporting my youngest whose entire freshman year was e-learning due to the pandemic, and caring for a senior - my mother. I was truly feeling the “sandwiched generation,” putting their needs first, which is not always easy with an in-person job.

Our hats are off to Mike Drennan, our new in-house plant waterer and consultant! Most of the live plants around the building are a beautiful living legacy to Sandra Robinson's tenure. With her retirement, Mike has stepped up to provide the extra care and attention that all the greenery requires.
Many of the plants were moved this week. Be mindful of the living plants that are now on the far-right side of the chancel behind the choir loft. And we have a new large plant close to the kitchen along the South windows of the café area, donated by Mike.
Research has shown plants purify the air we breathe, reduce stress levels, boost our productivity, give us oxygen, and possibly even improve our focus on tasks! Thank you for your dedication to keep them thriving, Mike. You are our plants’ superhero, even the plants seem to stand taller in your presence!

"I Can't Dance"

Did you miss the chance to buy a space in Shirley Adam's "I Can't Dance" Dance Class at last year's auction? There are 6 spaces available. Just in time to have your moves ready for the 8/2 Blues Dance at UCE.

In 3 one-hour classes, you will begin to move with the rhythm of music, connect to a partner and move to slow and faster tempos. Shirley's gender inclusive teaching uses simple dances to help you become comfortable as a leader or a responder. Her specialty is creating brave space for you to uncover the dancer in you. Merengue is the first dance for class one, then the four count hustle (yep, Saturday Night Fever favorites) then in class three, we will waltz. Families are welcome! Or bring your dance partner! The first class is the only one you cannot skip - 3:30 Friday, July 12, then continue the next Friday at 3:30 July 19 and the third class is Friday July 26th, but one hour earlier: 2:30pm

CLICK HERE to purchase a space at $65 a flat fee for yourself, or yourself and a partner, or yourself and your family.

Volunteer with the Welcoming Congregation Renewal Working Group

A Unitarian Universalist Welcoming Congregation is a congregation that has intentionally spent time engaging in programming, worship services, and education to make their congregation a safe place for the LGBTQIA+ communities. UCE was certified as a Welcoming Congregation in 1997. The original Welcoming Congregation process focused on addressing homophobia in ourselves and our congregation. The UUA has updated this process with its Welcoming Congregation Renewal program to include addressing transphobia as well as homophobia. Members of our Rainbow Alliance have formed a working group to complete this Welcoming Congregation Renewal process.

This process involves the entire congregation and members with LGBTQIA+ identities and all allies are invited to join the Working Group. If you would like to be engaged with this process, please contact Rev. Susan at sfrances@ucevanston.org by July 7, 2024.

To learn more about Welcoming Congregations, please check out the UUA website - or our UCE Rainbow Alliance webpage.

Huge thanks for you who have driven to MiIwaukee for this work. The opportunity continues at the Chase (Monday-Friday) and Mill Rd (Saturday only) DMV offices. The Chase population is largely Hispanic, some are undocumented and unable to register. Speaking a bit of Spanish is helpful. If you are trained, you can continue to participate through SignUp, here.

UCE Non-Fiction Book Group

The nonfiction book group will meet virtually on Zoom at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 28th using our recurring link to discuss an opinion piece by columnist David Brooks which appeared in the New York Times on August 10, 2023. In his article entitled "Hey America, Grow Up!", Brooks traces the decline of the American psyche since cultural changes that began after World War II. He says that therapy emphasized people's sense of self-worth and sometimes people depended on others to validate their own self-esteem. As time went on, we were in the middle of a mental health crisis, with rising depression and suicide rates.

To learn what David Brooks believes about how people build secure identities, read his article.

Zoom discussion on Sunday, July 28th at 2pm, using our recurring ZOOM link.

UCE Fiction Book Group

The UCE Fiction Book Group is reading a classic this month:

James, by Percival Everett.

This is the story of Huckleberry Finn told from the perspective of the slave Jim, who, like Huck, is escaping an abusive situation. In their runaway journey, the Black James (his mother called him James, not Jim) has a completely different experience from Huck, as an untethered Negro loose in the South. James in Everett’s novel is a more realistic picture of what being a Black man in the pre-civil war south was like. Still the same humor and nonsense of Huckleberry Finn, but with a definite bite.

Friday, July 19, at 7-8pm, using our recurring ZOOM link.
