Welcome

Calgarians are enjoying the height of summer by finding a shady spot to curl up with a book. They’re claiming the passenger seat on road trips so they can finish their novel before the next adventure. They’re popping headphones in to listen to an audiobook while they walk. Calgarians love to read, and we’re happy to bring some of the best mystery authors in the world to their doorstep in less than three months.

We can’t wait to welcome you this fall and show you all we have to offer.

Meet the Guests of Honour: Dave Sweet

With 25 years of policing experience, Detective Dave Sweet (retired) has investigated some of Canada’s most heinous crimes. Over his career, Dave worked as a patrol officer and undercover police officer and led task forces targeting gangs and organized crime groups operating in Calgary.

In 2009, Dave joined the ranks of the homicide unit where he spent 14.5 years specializing in homicide, missing person, and suspicious death investigations.

In addition to a Distinguished Service Award in 2010, Dave earned the Chief’s Award for Investigative Excellence in 2017, the Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal in 2021, and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022. Dave’s books are Skeletons in My Closet (2023) co-written with Sarah Kades, and Undaunted with Susan Forest (2024).

We’re excited to have him join us as a Special Guest at Bouchercon 2026. For more information, visit his website here.

Kids' Bouchercon Update

We’re excited to share our new Kids’ Bouchercon logo!

We’re looking forward to welcoming our Guest of Honour, Kevin Sands, to our special kids’ event on Saturday, October 24. There will be breakout sessions, an author panel, a pop-up bookstore and much more at the Calgary Public Library in downtown Calgary.

We had a fantastic response from Bouchercon attendees who wanted to participate in the Kids’ Con but unfortunately, we weren't able to include everyone due to limited timeslots. Thank you so much to everyone who responded, and a special welcome to our participating authors: Lisa Harkrader, Penny Warner, Lorna Schultz Nicholson, David Poulsen, Jess Lourey, Juanita Violini, and K.B. Jackson.

Also, a huge thank you to those children’s and YA authors who have already donated items for our swag bags. Kids’ Bouchercon is open to children up to and including YA so if anyone (or their publisher) would like to donate books or bookish items, we’d love to hear from you. Contact Devin Abraham at conmanager@bouchercon.com for more information.

Young readers and fans will be able to register for Kids’ Bouchercon in August. A link to the library registration page will be added to the website soon.

Attending Authors

While you count down the months until October, check out the attending authors coming to Calgary!

We’re excited to see such an amazing line up of authors and have adjusted our summer reading lists to include their newest releases, as well as books from their backlists. You should do the same.

Fun Facts

It’s summer now, but when you arrive in Calgary this fall, be prepared for anything. Calgary has an average of 88 snow days a year. You might get to see some of the white stuff this October, or you might get a fresh, fall day, it’s hard to tell. Pack your toque in case!

Call for Silent Auction Donations

Our silent auction is looking for donations! Funds raised will go towards the Further Education Society of Alberta and it’s an excellent way to advertise your book, brand, or business.

We are grateful for any contribution, but we have a few tips:

  • Auction items that do well usually contain more than books – consider including swag, tea, coffee, chocolate, or handmade items.
  • Organize your donation around a theme, like Halloween, BBQ, murderer munchies, Canadiana, etc.
  • Consider donating a service, naming rights to a character, a virtual book club visit, a manuscript critique, etc that doesn’t need to be squeezed into a suitcase.
  • Due to border crossing issues, it is probably best to avoid alcohol, fresh fruit, or veggie items.

More information can be found here.

Sponsorship

We are looking for corporate and community support to help us welcome mystery and crime-writing fans and professionals from around the world. There are countless ways to get involved, and we’d love to work with you.

Sponsor the thrill, sponsor the mystery, sponsor the connection!

Check out our sponsorship page here or contact us at Sponsorship2026@bouchercon.com for more details.

Special Events for Authors

Applications are open for the following:

Cozies & Cocktails –

Cross-Border Cozies & Cocktails will take place on Wednesday, October 21st, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Ten cozy authors will be selected for short readings and fifteen will be selected to provide giveaways— all chosen by lottery.

For your chance to showcase your mysteries to Bouchercon attendees, fill out the form here, but make sure you do before August 28, 2026.

Selected authors will be notified by September 13th. Priority will be given to authors who’ve never done a Cozies & Cocktails event, and to an even mix of authors from Canada and the U.S. (and points beyond.)

Twenty on the Twenty

Would you like twenty minutes to engage with readers to promote your work? Twenty on the Twenty will offer time slots scheduled every twenty minutes Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9:00am - 3:40pm for authors, editors, agents, or subject matter experts to engage with an audience. This programming is less formal than panels, with seating for 25, a podium and microphone. There is no presentation tech available (no projector or screen).

If you would like to participate in Twenty on the Twenty, please complete this application form before August 5. Priority will be given to attendees who have not been assigned a panel. Selected participants will be notified by August 12.

If you have difficulties with this application, please contact Events2026@Bouchercon.com.

To find out details and qualification requirements, check out the website here.

Please note: Readers (and everyone else attending the convention) don’t need to apply for these events! They are free and included with convention registration.

Set the Stage for Mystery

Vertigo Theatre is hosting a special performance of THE LODGER for Bouchercon delegates and their friends and family on Tuesday, October 20. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s famous silent thriller of the same name, renowned Canadian novelist Susie Moloney and award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen reanimate this classic suspense into a modern and stunning world premiere.
