Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Greetings from Yosemite National Park. Our school's 8th grade class arrived on Monday for a week long naturalist program, hiking, community building exercises, and celebrating mass.

In this beautiful setting, we are celebrating the new Mass for the Care of Creation promulgated by Pope Leo XIV. When the pope introduced the mass last July at an outdoors mass at the Papal summer residence, Castel Gandolfo near Rome, he noted that he was surrounded by beauty in “a kind of ‘natural’ cathedral.”

Being in Yosemite Valley is certainly like being in a cathedral! That kind of beauty invites a certain longing for harmony in the human heart. Carrying the legacy of Pope Francis, Pope Leo invited Christians to spread harmony with creation and with one another, throughout the world, drawing inspiration from St. Augustine:

“O Lord, your works praise you so that we may love you, and we love you so that your works may praise you.”

In the wake of more violence in the Latter Day Saints community in Michigan, we cry out to God for harmony in our world.

All creation points to God and part of that celebration is the Blessing of the Animals. So join us in celebrating your beloved pets with a special blessing.

Peace, Father Gil
