Most gracious and merciful God, you have reconciled us to yourself through Jesus Christ your son, and called us to new life in him. Grant that we, who begin this new year in his Name, may complete it to his honor and glory; who lives and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

New Year's Resolutions
As a new calendar year begins, one of the things many folks like to do (myself included) is to make New Year’s Resolutions. Instead of pondering how to lose some weight, I thought I’d take another perspective. For your enjoyment and for your serious reflection, I have come up with some that you might like to consider. They make some sense and may just make your life and that of your parish family a bit healthier in the coming year.

Here they are:

  • Resolve to worship and pray regularly. There are times when all of us feel we might not need the church. BUT, the other members of your church family need you and your contributions to our life together. Believe me, you’ll find the Lord’s Day at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection much more exciting than St. Mattress.

  • Resolve to contact your clergy when there is an illness or any kind of crisis in your family. Beyond common thought, your clergy are not mind readers blessed with telepathic gifts.

  • Resolve to accentuate the positive, and if something in your opinion seems amiss in your parish, share your concerns with the parish leadership, not with your friends at the next dinner party.

  • Resolve to see your clergy as human beings. They are not saints, prayer machines, seers, or folks who always make something good happen. Their hurts, hopes, and hassles are very much like your own. They simply want to be with us through the very best of life and through the very worst it sometimes brings.

  • Resolve to support the church with your time, energy, effort, talent, and financial resources. Healthy churches are filled with participants and not spectators.

  • Resolve to understand that the church is you! Yes, that means you! Christ has no other hands to help, ears to hear, eyes to see, and lips to praise than yours and mine.

  • Resolve to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. You are offering them the most precious and priceless gift you have to offer.

While the Search Committee continues to do their important work of discerning who God may be calling to be the next Rector of Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, let’s not be distracted but rather content to be the priest and people of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and all strive together to be touched by the Lord of Life and simply do the work he has given us to do. I feel so blessed to be your priest right now and I pray you feel blessed to be a part of our faith community.

Now…..let’s all have a great new year!

Love, Fr. Doug+

Outreach Ministry Update
A new partneship with Hillcrest Ministries
The Outreach Committee at Resurrection recently decided to participate in a partnership with Hillcrest Ministries of Kansas City in support of their Hope Essentials program, which provides 3-month transitional housing that is rent and utility-free to families. Each family works with staff and volunteers to set goals and gain the resources necessary to move into a home of their own at the end of the 3-month program while simultaneously working hard to pay off debt, save money and learn valuable life skills.

Here is a picture of a brand new resident this week who is 30 years old, was abandoned by his mother as a baby, and went into foster care. His grandmother got him out and raised him, but she’s been his only support system. He never learned how to be financially responsible. He was living in his car, but now has a job. Hillcrest is working to teach him essential skills so he can live on his own. Thanks and blessings to our own Janeece Buckner who took him a warm meal and cookies this week. Prayers for his success as part of this unique program!
Search Committee Update
Committee working on Parish Profile
The Search Committee continues to work on preparing our Parish Profile, a booklet with many pictures, which tells the story of our Parish, its demographics, needs, community environment, history, vision, dreams, and mission. The committee is also close to completing detailed questions contained in a portfolio for the Episcopal Church Office of Transition Ministries. This document is used to share Information about the Rector position at Resurrection in The Episcopal Church database accessible to clergy in transition who are searching for new positions.

You can follow the progress of the Search Committee anytime by looking at the Committee's new Rector Search webpage, found on Resurrection's website under the 'Connect' tab on the menu line.
