On Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m., entomologist Gabriel LeMay will lead a walk in Belfast City Park, focusing on how to spot signs of infestation and insect damage in common trees.
The event, sponsored by the Belfast Garden Club and its Tree Working Group, will begin at the gate to the park on Northport Avenue, and is free and open to the public.
As a member of the Maine Forest Service, LeMay tracks and studies insects in all corners of the state, according to a Garden Club news release. He manages multiple state forest monitoring projects, including an exotic woodborer/bark beetle survey and the moth light trapping program. His areas of expertise include plant-insect interactions and integrated pest management.
This is the third of a winter/spring series of explorations of Belfast trees. The fourth and final walk, in May, will match migratory birds and their favorite trees.

“Made in Belfast” is the topic for the Belfast Historical Society meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, in the Abbott Room in the Belfast Free Library. Megan Pinette, historical society president, will present an overview of the history of the many and varied items manufactured in Belfast, from axes to wagon wheels. Long before the mid-twentieth century, when Belfast was known as “Broiler Capital of the World,” there were factories throughout downtown producing shoes, men’s pants and vests, furniture, carriages, and bottled soda.
The Belfast Historical Society presents talks of local historical interest on the 4th Monday of the month from April through October. All presentations are at 7:00 pm in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library and are open to the public. Seating is limited to 75. FMI visit BelfastMuseum.org or call 207 338-9229. These programs will be recorded and can be viewed on Belfast Community Television and on the museum website.

Fresh doesn’t mean sitting in a tank — it means coming straight from the water.
At H & H Mercantile, we can get you live lobster, fresh mussels, fresh clams, and local crab meat. When you place your order the day before, we go directly to the boat, the harvester, or the crab‑meat picker to get it for you. No holding tanks, no guessing how long something’s been waiting around. Just truly fresh Maine seafood, brought in because you asked for it. Message us on Facebook or stop in to place your order for tomorrow’s haul.
