Eglinton East LRT project reaches milestone; Crosstown opening date may be in sight
The City of Toronto has announced a major milestone in relation to the Eglinton East Light Rail Transit (LRT) project just as rumblings begin to emerge about the beleaguered Eglinton Crosstown LRT tentatively opening in September.
The city reported recently that the Eglinton East LRT project has completed the transit and rail project assessment process, thus concluding a key environmental component.
Together with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), the city is planning a rapid transit line (future Line 7) to span across eastern Scarborough.

BuildForce Canada projecting elevated construction demands
The national outlook on construction investment activity is for growth between now and 2034, reports BuildForce Canada in its 2025–2034 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward national forecast, which was released on April 4.
After remaining largely unchanged in 2025, investment in the residential sector is projected to chart a steady series of increases from 2026 to 2034. BuildForce says activity is expected to be initially driven by strong demand for new-housing construction as interest rate pressures ease, and pent-up demand brings consumers back to the market.

Ontario regions complementing or competing with each other? BuildForce explains
BuildForce Canada has unveiled its predictions for Ontario in its 2025–2034 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward report, with the forecast showing the future is a little murky and the residential sector will be playing a critical role in the industry’s success.
It should be noted the investment trends and employment projections by BuildForce were developed with industry input prior to the emergence of potential trade tensions between Canada and the United States.
The forecast does not take into account the possible impacts of tariffs.

Toronto moves forward with bridge repairs as part of Gardiner Expressway plan
As part of the next stage of the Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan, the City of Toronto will soon begin critical repair work on five bridges to ensure they remain in a state of good repair. Beginning Monday, April 7, the westbound Gardiner Expressway will be reduced from four lanes to three between Park Lawn Road and Grand Avenue for approximately one year. Rehabilitation work on Section 3 of the Gardiner Expressway, running from Highway 427 to the Humber River, is scheduled to take place from 2027 to 2031; however, five bridges in Section 3 have been identified for an advanced start following condition assessments that noted the need for critical repair.
