STAFF SPEAKING

Here is a note from the Membership & Events Manager, Laura Lawrence:

"Fall is here and I have received such warm welcomes from the Chamber of Commerce! I will be the new Membership & Events Manager while Meghan is on Maternity leave.

Currently I am working on a couple of exciting events including the WestJet luncheon and the Business After 5 at Northland Dodge. Both will have excellent door Prizes; the WestJet luncheon in particular is intriguing as WestJet told us every guest will be leaving with a special gift. Please feel free to say hello to me at one of our events or the next time you are in the office. I look forward to meeting you soon! "

SUPPORTING OUR NEW NEIGHBOURS

The Canadian Chamber network has been active across the country, assisting within their communities to help settle and engage our newcomers. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce wants to capture the level of involvement that businesses have had in the initial integration and support of newly-arrived Syrian Refugees.

Many touching stories have been shared, and the Canadian Chamber would love to hear more.  They are gathering information on best practices, wanting to gain a big-picture perspective about where community efforts are being focused.

Finally, the Canadian Chamber would like to share the information that they gather - so that others may copy your good work!  They ask for your help by completing this five minute survey in order to document how your company has helped in any settlement efforts.

Currently, there are over 4,200 female apprentices registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) in 72 different trades across B.C., and the number is growing. Women are becoming more aware of the opportunities in trades careers and are taking a chance in enrolling in training for 'non-traditional' Red Seal trades such as, Welder, Plumber, and Electricians.  For example, since 2008, there has been a 98% increase in the number of female Welder apprentices!
