June is PTSD Awareness Month

Each June, we recognize National PTSD Awareness Month - a time to raise understanding, break stigma, and encourage those affected by post-traumatic stress to seek support.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has lived through a traumatic event, from combat veterans and survivors of assault to those affected by accidents or emotional abuse.

PTSD doesn’t always look the same. It can show up as anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, or withdrawal from everyday life. Many people struggle in silence, unaware that what they’re experiencing has a name - or that treatment is available.

This month, we honor the strength of survivors and reaffirm our commitment to compassionate, trauma-informed care.

Whether trauma happened recently or long ago, healing is possible. At RCBM, we offer individualized, evidence-based treatment to support each person's unique path to recovery.

5 Facts You Probably Don’t Know About PTSD

PTSD is often misunderstood, and many people struggle in silence without realizing that help is available.

Joel L. Young, MD, RCBM’s Medical Director and Founder, wrote an insightful piece for Psychology Today that clears up misconceptions and sheds light on the lesser-known aspects of PTSD. In this article, Dr. Young shares:

  • How PTSD can develop long after trauma
  • Why repeated trauma can increase risk
  • That PTSD doesn’t always involve flashbacks
  • How shame and confusion can delay care
  • And why treatment - and hope - are possible

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful trauma therapy that helps individuals reprocess distressing memories and reduce their emotional impact. It's especially effective for treating PTSD and complex trauma.

SPRAVATO® Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic

“I feel like I am in a tunnel with no light at the end of it.”

“Getting dressed or leaving the house is an enormous effort."

“On any given day or time, I break down and cry for no reason.”

Does this sound like what you are feeling or experiencing? Have you tried talking with a therapist? Or tried different medications from your healthcare provider? …. but nothing seems to help?

You may be suffering from “treatment-resistant depression.” However, there is hope! At the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine, we offer a SPRAVATO® Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic that can help you feel better and engage in the activities you once enjoyed, while completing tasks of daily living.

SPRAVATO® is the first nasal spray medication specifically for adults with treatment resistant depression and major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts or actions.

"The staff is absolutely wonderful and makes treatment a pleasant time. I usually have anxiety, but the staff is so welcoming and friendly that I don't feel any anxiety when doing my treatment."

"Well coordinated program - should be the model for other programs or eventually Spravato administration specific practices."

Clinical Research Opportunities

Our clinical research team is currently recruiting for a trial studying fatigue in adults with ADHD. If you are between the ages of 18 and 65 with a diagnosis (or suspected diagnosis) of ADHD and fatigue symptoms that are negatively impacting your quality of life, you may qualify for participation. Click here to complete a pre-qualification questionnaire for this study.
