PAWS for People Community Newsletter: Mid November, 2021
PAWS Annual Appeal Kicks Off!
Thank you for believing in PAWS for People and supporting us in so many ways. You have helped PAWS continue to bring Hope & Healing. You’ve enabled us to adapt and continue to reach people in new, creative ways. It is difficult for PAWS when we are not able to visit in person – especially when visits with our dedicated pet therapy teams are greatly needed by so many.

To keep bringing hope, healing, kindness, and comfort to those who need us, PAWS needs your help. Together, we will brighten the future for so many as we return to in-person, life-changing pet therapy programs in a world where the need is greater than ever before!

Your 2021 Annual Appeal gift will have lasting impact by funding PAWS pet therapy teams and programs. We have a lot to do this year to assist those who really need us. Our hope is that we will be able to meet their needs, but as we are still recovering financially, we will only be able to do so with your trust, your involvement, and your financial support. We are grateful for your belief in PAWS.

You can give to PAWS by mail, online, or by calling the office at 302-351-5622 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thank you for your greatly needed gift.

Pet Therapy in Action this Week
Piper (Sheri Kearns) enjoys some cuddling while providing some lunch time DeStressing at Villa Maria Academy High School in Malvern, PA
Jersey and Amy Cook, a PAWS in the Workplace team, participated in Team up Against Drugs and Bullying Spirit Day at Holly Hall Elementary School in Elkton, Maryland.
PAWS and High School DeStress – A Class Act!
Whether it’s a by-product of COVID or something that’s been simmering for a while, teens experiencing elevated stress and anxiety is becoming far too common. Requests for PAWS DeStress sessions, which have long been typical for colleges and universities around exam time, have seen an increase from high schools.

PAWS provided daily pet therapy visits for Radnor Township School District during May and June of this year. The program is expected to resume with weekly visits at Radnor High School and Radnor Middle School from December 2021 until early June 2022.

After having PAWS DeStress for students through Community Events, Triton Regional High School, in Runnemede, NJ, realized the benefits of pet therapy and requested regular sessions for School Year 2021-22. This program began in late September with Sasha & Kathleen Convery and Gizmo & Carlie Sobolewski alternating the weekly 1-hour visits with the Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Each student earns a golden ticket to engage with the PAWS teams. Additional PAWS teams joining the schedule soon include Parker & Rosemary Dougherty, Maggie Mae & Peggie Kramme, and Cooper & Linda Moneypenny-Reiter.

According to Rio Brodeur, Mental Health Assistant Counselor, "Triton Regional High School is thrilled to have a partnership with PAWS for People, especially this school year, where many of our students are returning to school for the first time since March of 2020. PAWS for People continues to visit our school each week to provide pet therapy services to students in grades 9-12 who may be struggling with a variety of different challenges outside the classroom. It has been amazing to see the reactions of students when they see one of their furry four legged friends walking down the hallway. I know that our staff has enjoyed having PAWS for People here just as much as our students have (if not more!)"

PAWS DeStress … in DeMand … and DeLivering healing pet therapy to those in need. A+!

Our Teams of the Week
Fay, Layka, & Lya
Fay Mintz-Guttin joined PAWS for People in July of 2019, with her lovable Standard Poodle Layka. Fay and Layka have been making kids smile at the Brandywine and Claymont Libraries, where they participate in the PAWS for Reading program. They have also shared furry love with the folks at Ivy Gables Senior Living and Cadia Rehabilitation-Silverside.

Most recently in July of this year, Fay added her sweet Lya to the mix, also a Standard Poodle and an Advanced level pup. Fay, Layka and Lya have taken the PAWS to Comfort class and will be ready to help those grieving a loss at a moment’s notice.

Thank you, Fay, Layka, and Lya, for the generous way you volunteer your time and help folks smile a little brighter in the community. The soothing love & comfort the girls provide is a warm spot in the days of all you meet.
Helen & Twilight
Helen Kim and her beautiful 6-year-old Lab Mix, Twilight, have been members with PAWS since March of 2019. Helen felt that being a therapy team would be a good way to give back to the community and Twilight has a great temperament for visiting.

One fun fact about this team…Twilight knows her commands in both English and Korean!

Helen brings Twilight to school with her at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark, DE as a PAWS in the Workplace Team where she provides great support for the students. Additionally, they have done several community events including lots of shifts at Barnes & Noble.

Thank you, Helen, for sharing your wonderful girl with the school and the community. Thank you, Twilight, for being a super sweet, snuggly friend with everyone you meet.
