Team One Update

On March 3 and 4, Team 1 was blessed!

A group of 7 students, a faculty member, and the vice-president for Institutional Advancement at Miseriacordia University in Dallas, PA spent their week-long Spring Break volunteering in the Sisters of Mercy ministries on the campus of Sacred Heart in Belmont. Wheels of Blessings was also fortunate to have this beautiful group assist us in making sandwiches and going out the next day. The group brought energy, enthusiasm, compassion, and respect to so many of our unhoused. We would love to see them again next year!

See photos of the students making sandwiches and out in the field the next day with their green Wheels of Blessings t-shirts.

In the next week's trip on March 11, we encountered several new people, for whom we ask your prayers:

  • A young woman on bicycle, whose baby is due in May. She is trying to find a place to stay and a stable address, so that the newborn will not be taken and put in foster care.

  • A young couple who were scammed out of a down payment on a house. They lost everything and are now homeless. Their two twins, age 5, were taken into foster care and unfortunately, were separated. In order to get their children back, the couple has to find work and a stable home and address. They are now looking for work, but say it is difficult since they are homeless. The wife said she is a former assistant manager of a retail store, and has other managerial experience.

  • A man in an electric scooter. He was seriously injured while on a construction job, unable to work, has disability but not enough to get by. He also recently lost his wife of 40 years.

QOA Team Two Update

Team 2 went out on March 17 and 25 and in Belmont, did find a few folks living in their cars. We were glad to see again a woman whom we had not seen in the last few months, when almost all of the car folk in the parking lots had been moved on. She had worked at the Subway in Walmart and told us of the hardships she, her husband and their dog have endured since the last times we saw them. Their dog was taken by Animal Control, among other difficulties. In another parking lot, we found 2 cars, with a young man and a couple. The young man was trying to jumpstart the couple's car. The husband of the couple said his wife, who was lying in the back seat, had been hit by a car and was recently released from the hospital. Their belongings were piled on top of their car. The young man spoke of searching for spiritual guidance and hoping to go to Queen of the Apostles. Leaving Belmont and going to the Lowell/ Cramerton areas, we found some folks behind a fast food restaurant. In east Gastonia, we found more bulldozed camps. Further down we found a man just out of prison. He had a damaged foot. He needed clothing, and was trying to connect with his wife to see his one month old son.

These situations are heartbreaking. However, telling them helps us all better understand the plight of so many in our country, replicated by what we see in Gaston County.

With your support, Wheels of Blessings seeks to bring a bit of immediate relief, resource information, respect, and hope to ease the burden, if only for a brief moment.
