KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. KNOWLEDGE SHARED IS POWER MULTIPLIED.
November 2021
Hello,

It's the end of the year. We want to send you and your family warm wishes during the holiday season.

At this time of the year, we often find ourselves busier than ever. Christmas shopping to do, work to complete, parties and gatherings to attend... the "To-Do" list can get long and overwhelming. If you find yourself anxious and stressed, you are not alone. According to The American Institute of Stress, nearly 69% of people are stressed by the feeling of having a “lack of time” and perceiving a “lack of money”. Over 50% are stressed about the “pressure to give or get gifts". Physical manifestations of holiday stress may include headaches, insomnia, exhaustion, digestive, and respiratory issues.

Below are some tips to help manage holiday-related stress:
  1. Create realistic goals (personal and work)
  2. Set clear expectations and boundaries with friends, families, and coworkers
  3. Discuss holiday plans with family members
  4. Limit the number of holiday and social gatherings
  5. Eat and sleep well; exercise daily

Instead of buying gifts, make something and drop it off/bring it to work. Playing Christmas carol trivia with friends and family can be lots of fun. A handwritten holiday card can feel more personable. Taking a walk in the woods and filling your lungs with the fresh scent of evergreen trees can be incredibly grounding. Watching a heartwarming holiday classic movie can bring joy.

Hearing Jingle Bells on the radio always brightens my spirit.

Dashing through the snow
On a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.

Peace, love, joy, magic, and hope! Have yourself the best holiday season!

Pharmacy Law & Regulatory Updates
Reminder: Manual Signatures Required on all Prescriptions

Paper prescriptions, including prescriptions created on paper and prescriptions generated by computer or a prescription application that are printed out or faxed, must be manually signed by the practitioner. This includes prescriptions faxed via computer or a prescription application which does not meet the requirements for electronic prescriptions in part 1311.

Proposed Regulatory Action: Self-Assessments for Pharmacies

The California Board of Pharmacy proposes to amend Section 1715 to update the self-assessment forms that pharmacists-in-charge must complete reflecting current laws and regulations. In addition, the Board proposes to incorporate many of the form’s requirements into the regulation text itself.

The self-assessment forms assist the pharmacy’s PIC to increase the pharmacy’s compliance with federal and state requirements and also make the pharmacy inspection process more meaningful by providing relevant information from the PICs to the Board inspectors.

Click below for information on how to submit written comments on the proposed text or read all documents associated with this proposed regulatory action. Comments are due on 12/27/2021.

OIG Exclusions List Check
Performing employment background screening is crucial for ensuring your organization is hiring the qualified talent to provide patient care services. For ACHC accreditation, background checks are to include Office of Inspector (OIG) exclusion list, criminal background record and national sex offender register.

Why are OIG exclusion lists checks necessary?
The OIG exclusion lists display individuals and entities that have been identified as excluded from participating in both federally and state funded programs. Reasons to why a prescriber/individual may be excluded included:

  1. A conviction related to Medicare/Medicaid programs
  2. A conviction related to patient abuse
  3. A conviction related to certain criminal activity (felony, controlled substance violations)

Where can I find information on excluded health professionals?
Safe Disposal of Sharps
The number of home-generated sharps is anticipated to increase by 300% over the next 10 years. The importance of protecting our community and healthcare workers against needlestick injuries is more important than ever.

It would be helpful to provide your patients with the information on how to safely dispose home-generated sharps.

  1. Box Drop and Collection Sites (doctor's office, pharmacy, hospital, medical waste facility, police or fire departments)
  2. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Sites
  3. Residential Special Waste Pickup Services
  4. Mail-Back

For additional details on these disposal options, read the full text here.
