Construction employment takes a hit in September
The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer, or “payroll employment,” fell by 57,400 in September, reports Statistics Canada in its latest Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours. The 0.3 per cent drop follows little change in August and an increase of 0.2 per cent in July. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was up by a half per cent, or 94,900 positions, in September. Canada’s construction sector landed on the wrong side of that cross-industry average, falling by a half per cent; a loss of 5,600 jobs in September.
