Highlights of the August 28, 2024, Session Meeting
The Session met with Aaron Baer, who had asked to join Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church by reaffirmation of faith. After a conversation with Aaron about his faith journey, the Session joyfully agreed to receive him as a member. He and Richard Recob will be welcomed into membership during worship on September 15.
Among other actions, the Session:
- Continued to move forward on treasurer Jack Marcum’s request to retire as church treasurer by the end of the year. Discussed a proposal from the Personnel Committee on how to divide up the duties of treasurer. Authorized Jack to begin training CHPC Administrative Assistant Megan Cahill and a volunteer from the congregation to take on some of the duties.
- Heard an update on deferred maintenance issues and approved a bid from a contractor to replace the water line to the sanctuary building. Agreed to have the breezeway between the two buildings removed rather than repainted and to seek more information from one of the contractors bidding on the project.
- Approved paying up to $2,000 for improvements in the church garden area, including installing rain barrels and clearing the area of weeds and debris.
- Approved hosting a Build-a-Bed event December 7–8, in partnership with First Christian Church.
- Approved a request from Spirit of Sophia for $1,000 to help them qualify for a $30,000 matching grant from the PC(USA)’s 1001 New Worshiping Communities.
- Received a report from the Nominating Committee and scheduled a congregational meeting to elect new church officers October 6.
- Reaffirmed CHPC’s commitment to using inclusive/expansive language and agreed to begin a congregation-wide discussion of what that means.
- Elected Don Mead and Eva Stimson as commissioners to the September 16 meeting of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery at Okolona Presbyterian Church.

Meet the Gardeners September 8!
Interested in learning more about the Master Gardeners and their work on the grounds of our church? Please plan to attend worship on Sunday, September 8, followed by a “Meet the Gardeners” reception in Henry Young Fellowship Hall. This will also be an opportunity to welcome and celebrate our new Music Director, Aaron Davidson, who begins his work with us September 8.
Beautiful changes are already noticeable in the weeks since the CHPC Session and the Jefferson County Master Gardener Association (JCMGA) voted to enter a partnership. These skilled gardeners, including CHPC member Claudia Foulkes, have been busy planting, weeding, and sprucing up areas, beginning in front of the church. They bring energy and ideas that fit with CHPC’s mission, including a facelift for the church’s meditation garden, a commitment to caring for the earth, and garden-centered activities for children and families.
Come meet some of the gardeners on September 8 and help us shape a vision for this exciting collaboration.

Did You Know?
What Presbyterians Believe
The Christian church’s birth was at Pentecost, as described in the Book of Acts. At Pentecost the Jewish disciples of Jesus proclaimed the Gospel to people of many cultures and languages. By the middle of the first century, the church was made up of Jewish and Gentile believers who worshiped God, in the name of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. The church began to grow rapidly throughout the region we now know as the Middle East, even though hardship and persecution from the Roman Empire.
During the fourth century, after more than 300 years of persecution under various Roman emperors, the church became established as a political as well as a spiritual power under the Emperor Constantine. The church became strong in the east (Greek-speaking) and the west (Latin-Speaking) regions of the Roman Empire and beyond. Among the greats of the east was Athanasius and among the greats of the west was Augustine. Eventually the western portions of Europe came under the religious and political authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Europe and parts of Asia came under the authority of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
During the Middle Ages a number of mystics emerged, including Julian of Norwich, who have shaped the spirituality of many Christians.
