Program Spotlight: JFS Orlando & Social Bridges
Throughout the last year, JFS Orlando and Social Bridges® have been partnering to offer accessible, peer-based, social-emotional skill groups to local students.
Social Bridges is a CASEL-aligned, evidence-driven program that fosters the social skills and emotional intelligence (EQ) that are critical for children and young adults to reach their full potential.

The program is especially beneficial for individuals who have diagnoses of ADHD, gifted or twice exceptional, ASD, anxiety disorders, and learning differences and/or have experienced trauma. Trained JFS therapists meet with students in groups both virtually and in-person and focus on various skills, including emotional regulation, matching social expectations, reading and responding to social cues, conversation skills, being helpful, making and keeping friends, assertiveness, perspective taking, problem solving, and empathy.

By partnering together, JFS Orlando and Social Bridges have been able to provide this program to those who might not have access to it otherwise.
“This program allows access to social and emotional learning skills to those who need it most,” says JFS Clinical Director, Ashlyn Douglass-Barnes.
The program is currently accepting new clients from elementary, middle, and high school for Fall 2022. Only Medicaid and Medicaid HMOs accepted, including Staywell, Simply, Aetna Better Health, Humana, UHC, and Sunshine.
Now accepting student applications for Fall 2022!
Community Spotlight
Caring for Our Ukrainian Neighbors

We have all seen the disturbing news reports of millions of Ukrainians being forced from their homes to find temporary shelter in neighboring European countries. The Orlando community, as always, stepped up to donate supplies and money to aid Ukrainian refugees in Europe. But some managed to make it to the shores of North America in the hope of reaching friends or relatives. Several refugees ended up in Orlando and needed help.

Naturally, they were referred to JFS Orlando for help. With few personal belongings, no access to money, and not being able to speak English, they were in urgent need of our assistance to make it through this difficult transition.

The Mental Health Impact of Antisemitism

By Brenda S Faiber,
JFS Orlando Therapist

Last year saw a 34% increase in antisemitic incidents in the United States, the highest number on record since ADL began tracking antisemitic incidents in 1979. Mental health professionals have also seen an increase in the number of those impacted directly and indirectly by antisemitism. Aside from the physical safety concerns, individuals of all ages can experience trauma and esteem issues from exposure to antisemitic imagery.

JFS Orlando counselors are trained to recognize and treat many of the symptoms associated with antisemitism. JFS Therapist Brenda S Faiber, MS, LMFT, will be participating in “How Antisemitism Impacts Individuals & Families”, a panel discussion on the impacts of antisemitism on our community.
