Welcome back! Concurrent learning began this Tuesday, with 9th and 12th graders who chose in-person hybrid learning returning to the building. For our freshmen who chose the option, this is their first week ever attending classes at Langley. Next week, many students in grades 10 and 11 will begin learning in-person two days a week as well.

I’m so thankful for our Langley faculty and staff, who’ve worked diligently to make the building sparkle and compliant with CDC and FCPS health safety guidelines. The PTSA showed our thanks and welcomed staff back this week with break-time treats. A shout out to PTSA Hospitality and Appreciation Committee chairs Clare Bradshaw and Sara Koenig, who delivered the scrumptious array of snacks and drinks to ten faculty and staff workrooms at LHS. We can all show our appreciation for the hard work of Langley's teachers and staff by sending Super Saxon Shoutouts. Click here and your shoutout will be sent to its recipient within a few days.
As concurrent learning gets rolling and we turn to spring, the PTSA has upcoming events you won't want to miss. Mark your calendars for the next virtual General Membership Meeting on Mar 10, 9:30-11am. Click here for the meeting link, or find it on the calendar on the PTSA website homepage. We'll announce the slate of PTSA officer nominees for 2021-22, and Dranesville School Board Representative Elaine Tholen will provide updates on the LHS/McLean HS boundary adjustment, the 2021-22 FCPS budget, school calendar options and more. On Mar 22, plan to bring items to the LHS parking lot for our spring food drive benefitting SHARE of McLean. Read below for more information.
As a reminder, students will be dismissed two-hours early tomorrow and Mon, Mar 8 is a staff development day and student holiday. View tomorrow's class schedule here. On both days, teachers will participate in professional development and planning activities and won't be available for office hours. Students won't have asynchronous assignments on Mar 8.

buy a leaf for the courtyard
|
|
Buy a leaf, or more, for the Courtyard Legacy Tree fundraiser! We still have an empty Science Courtyard that needs landscaping. To fund the project, donate a leaf to the Langley Legacy Tree, the beautiful wall sculpture that is “growing” in the Langley Lobby, across from the Main Office.
|
|
The Legacy Tree is a permanent and prominent record of generous courtyard contributors. Choose your engraved message – leaves make wonderful tributes to students, teachers, family and friends! Giving levels are copper ($50), silver ($100), gold ($200) and acorn or bird ($500). To donate your tree leaves/acorns/birds, click on the Langley PTSA homepage and scroll down to the Legacy Tree article. Questions? Email Chrissie Lavin at chrissielavin1@gmail.com.

Langley welcomed Catherine Kennedy as its Social Worker last year. A native of Bethesda, MD, this is her eighth year in the FCPS. She's in her second year at Langley after spending six years at Longfellow MS. “I really wanted to try working at the high school level and I’m happy I made the move,” Ms. Kennedy said.
Ms. Kennedy was a Psychology and Human Development major at Connecticut College and earned a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from Boston College. Ms. Kennedy has had this field of work in mind for quite some time. “I have always enjoyed working with and helping people. I loved my AP Psych class in high school and continued with psychology classes in college. After college, I decided to get my MSW so I could work with children and families in a clinical setting.”
Ms. Kennedy has an interest in specializing and working with younger kids and teens, helping them through challenging times. “I work with students and families at Langley to provide interventions and support that promote the educational and social-emotional success of all students. I provide individual and group counseling for students, crisis intervention, attendance interventions and behavioral consultations.” Ms. Kennedy urges students who need any guidance, support, mentoring or other help to see her.
FCPS social workers focus on family and community factors that influence learning. They provide intensive services to students facing issues that pose risks to their academic success, such as parent divorce and separation, poverty, truancy, chronic illness, mental health problems, conduct problems or child abuse, and they form a mental health team with school psychologists and counselors to help their students.
As a social worker, Ms. Kennedy also works with families to connect them to community resources and mental health services. “I also participate in the special education screening and eligibility process. I collaborate with administrators, FCPS staff and teachers to help support students. I also help with the homebound instruction referral process and coordination.”
When not at Langley, Ms. Kennedy spends time with her husband and two kids, ages 3 and 5. She also enjoys being outside, crafting and organizing.
