BIXBY BULLETIN NEWSLETTER

June 2023
Director's Dispatch
The annual Bixby Library fundraising soirée takes flight on Friday, June 9, from 7-11 pm, and it promises to be yet another fabulous event. This is a perfect excuse/opportunity to step out to enjoy an evening of food, fun, and dancing to The Grift under the historic stained-glass dome of the Bixby Library in downtown Vergennes. Feel free to dress “fancy” for the theme or come as you are.

Tickets are $75 and include a welcome cocktail by Crooked Ladle or mocktail created especially for us by Adventure Dinner, delicious food from local chefs, famously yummy chocolate from Daily Chocolate, a “flight” of beer tasting from Black Flannel, and the opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new folks, too.

All the proceeds from the event go directly towards helping the Bixby provide free community resources to the Addison County five-town region, from children's programming, internet access, a library of things, free e-books/streaming movies, and everything in between. It's a perfect excuse to get dressed up for a night out on the town and support a great cause while doing it.

We’ve had fun with auction items celebrating this year’s theme. Here are just a few to look forward to for a one-of-kind-with-a-story graduation, Father’s Day, wedding, anniversary, or birthday gifts (or just for you, of course):

  • A personal tour for four at Beta Technologies and a ride in the simulator
  • A starter flight lesson in a Cessna
  • Soaring lessons
  • The chance to make a birdie with three other buddies on the Basin Harbor Golf course
  • Six Bixby Chicks who just hatched in the Children’s Room, plus a chick care package from BJs Farm Supply in Panton
  • …and so much more!

See you there, and thank you!

What's New at the Library?
All Together Now: Summer Reading at the Bixby
June marks the beginning of summer reading here at the Bixby, a time to encourage reading and library use for all ages! We are excited to continue the tradition of our Booked for Bikes kids reading program in partnership with the Vergennes Rotary Club, where kids can log their reading time and enter to win weekly prizes with grand prizes (like bikes!) awarded at Vergennes Day in August. Adults can participate in our Summer Reading BINGO challenge to be entered into our monthly prize drawings from now through the end of August.
Museum and Park Passes Are Available for Checkout
Parks and museums are opening back up for the season! Stop by the Bixby to check out a library pass for free or reduced admission to the Birds of Vermont Museum, Rokeby Museum, VT State Parks and Historic Sites, Vermont History Museum, Shelburne Museum, ECHO Science Center and Aquarium, and Fort Ticonderoga. Passes may be borrowed for three days.
Take Home Seeds from the Bixby's Seed Library
We're excited to announce the launch of the Bixby Seed Lending Library! Bixby cardholders can borrow free vegetable, flower, and herb seed packets to take home and plant in their gardens. At the end of the season, save some seeds and return them to the library for others to use or donate some seed packets to replenish our inventory. We also have a great collection of gardening books to borrow, some of which are featured next to this beautiful, original library card catalog.

Thank you to the Vergennes Leo Club and Circulation Desk volunteer, Annie Hopper, for assisting us with this project!
Bixby Summer Soirée Online Auction
Can’t make it to the Bixby Summer Soirée Fundraiser? We’ll miss you, but you can still join in the fun and help support your library! On Monday, June 12, we’ll launch our online auction on the GalaBid platform, which will run through Friday, June 16. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook and Instagram pages for the link to participate!
Librarians' Corner
Our Adult Summer Reading program has begun! From now until August 31, people ages 16 and older can participate in the Summer Reading BINGO Challenge for a chance to win a Bixby tote bag and a Flying Pig Bookstore gift card in our three monthly drawings. Pick up a BINGO card at the library, complete the reading challenges for a BINGO, and turn in your card to the library. Three entries are permitted, and drawings will be held at the end of each month. Let us know if you need any book recommendations. Happy reading!

Our eggs have hatched! Visit the Children's Room this weekend to check out the chicks we've been incubating for the last three weeks.

Summer break is almost here, and that means it's almost time to start summer reading! Booked for Bikes officially kicks off on Saturday, June 17th. Stop into the library that Saturday to join us for LEGO Club, a collaborative art project, and a movie matinee. Pick up your reading entry forms to log your hours and receive this year's reading tracker. Turn them in regularly to qualify for weekly prizes.

Summer programming will start in earnest as soon as school ends with the Good Citizen Challenge, another Stuffy Repair Fair and Stuffy Sleepover, Rokeby Storytimes every third Tuesday of the month, and the return of Bixby Storytimes to the library on Thursday mornings. Have you ever wondered how a computer works or what it looks like inside? Sign up to "Take It Apart with an Engineer" on Saturday, July 1, to learn all about computers and have your questions answered.

Feeling creative? Like doing crafts? The Bixby has supplies out in the Community Room all week long for you to create a mask for yourself or for the Soiree Photo Booth - or one for each! Stop in and see what kind of mask you can create.

We Recommend
"Everything Everywhere All at Once"
In this sci-fi action film, an audit of Evelyn Wang's laundromat triggers a heroic journey through the multiverse where the only constant is her complicated love for her family. This film is unlike anything I have ever seen, but I will say that Michelle Yeoh's performance is perfect. Winner of seven Academy Awards, so give it a try!
Cici's Journal: The Adventures of a Writer-In-Training by Joris Chamblain,
Aurélie Neyret (Illustrator)
With gorgeous illustrations, this is a great graphic novel for kids describing both the importance of persistence but also thinking about people other than yourself. It's easy to get interested along with Cici in the two mysteries she discovers and it's fun to see how she learns and grows. The art is beautiful and the journal entries make for an interesting storytelling style.
Lock Every Door by Riley Sager
Have you ever found an author and then read through one book after another? For me, recently, that's been true with Riley Sager's books. If you enjoy creepy page-turners, give them a try.
I just finished Lock Every Door, about a young woman who is desperate for a job and takes a position as an apartment-sitter in a glamorous yet eerie New York City building. There are rules that she must follow: No visitors, No nights spent away from the building, No disturbing other tenants. Jules seems able to handle it all until other apartment sitters start disappearing...
