Why it matters |
Diesel hit $6.28 a gallon this week, and paper mills are passing that cost along. Seven North American mills, including Sylvamo, Sappi, Billerud, Kruger and ND Paper, have added fuel or freight surcharges of $20–25 a ton this fall. That comes on top of carrier fuel surcharges on LTL and truckload.
For magazine and catalog publishers, delivered paper and freight costs are rising even where base prices hold. ND Paper’s surcharge comes off only after diesel stays under $4.66 for four weeks, so plan for it in 2027 budgets.
