Ashley has always been resilient. Born and raised in Atlanta, she became a mother at just 16 years old, stepping into adult responsibilities early in life. With the support of her family, she navigated those early challenges and, after the birth of her second child, began building a life of independence on her own.
Ashley secured her first apartment in Columbus, Georgia, while working remotely and saving money. But when it came time to renew her lease two years later, she made the decision to return to Atlanta—hoping to create new opportunities for herself and her children while being closer to family.
What followed was a devastating setback.
While trying to secure housing, Ashley connected with what she believed was a legitimate agency offering rent-to-own opportunities. Instead, she became the victim of a scam. Money she had worked hard to save was taken, and the promised housing never materialized. As the situation unraveled, Ashley found herself overwhelmed, anxious, and ultimately without a home.
The loss didn’t stop there. Without stable housing, Ashley was unable to continue her remote job and eventually lost her employment. Suddenly, she and her children were facing homelessness.
Despite the uncertainty, Ashley remained determined.
She temporarily stayed with family members while searching for resources and a path forward. Eventually, she connected with Gateway Atlanta and was referred to Nicholas House’s family shelter. There, Ashley began to rebuild. With the stability and support of Nicholas House, she secured full-time employment and took important steps toward independence.
Ashley and her daughters were then referred to our New Horizons program in DeKalb County, a permanent supportive housing program designed for families experiencing chronic homelessness and additional barriers. Through this program, families are placed directly into stable housing and receive ongoing, individualized support from case managers to help them maintain stability and build independence. Ashley and her daughters moved into their own apartment in November 2025.
Today, Ashley describes her life in one word: blessed.
After everything they endured, having a place to call home means everything. Ashley and her daughters now enjoy simple but meaningful moments—cooking meals together, having their own space, and experiencing the privacy and stability they once lost.
Ashley continues to work full-time while exploring opportunities to increase her income and better support her family. One of her main goals is to achieve full financial independence.
Reflecting on her journey, Ashley is deeply grateful.
She wants supporters to know that without the generosity of donors and volunteers, families like hers would struggle to meet even their most basic needs. From meals to holiday celebrations, every act of support made a difference for her children during a difficult time.
To other families facing similar challenges, Ashley offers this encouragement:
“Stay prayed up. Don’t give up. It could be worse. Nicholas House wants to see you grow—stay focused. It will get better.”
Ashley’s story is a powerful reminder that with support, stability, and determination, families can move from crisis to hope—and from hope to home.
