The 2023 Eastern Energy Expo Thrives in Atlantic City, NJ
|
With more than 2,700 attendees, 216 exhibitors and 10 trucks on display, the 2023 Eastern Energy Expo was an incredible success.
This year, the Expo moved to the convention center in Atlantic City with Harrah’s as the host hotel, held May 21-24. The convention and trade show resulted in countless accolades and benefits for attendees, exhibitors and sponsors.
Three industry leaders - the Atlantic Region Energy Expo (AREE), the National Association of Oil & Energy Service Professionals (OESP) and the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association (PPA) - joined forces for another powerful annual conference.
|
The event again provided a forum that brought all segments of the petroleum marketing industry together to network and learn. Heating fuel marketers, motor fuel distributors and HVAC and oil service professionals reunited for the signature industry event.
The show featured more than 65 business programs across three tracks (Technical, Business, Motor Fuels/C-Store) and included more than 40 new exhibiting companies, offering products and services for the energy and home comfort industry.
|
The convention also offered a variety of social and networking opportunities, including the OESP Reception/Hospitality Night, the Annual OESP Awards Banquet and the Annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Tournament. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to welcome new OESP members!
Marking the first time the event was held in New Jersey, Atlantic City did not disappoint.
The exhibit hall was packed and the education seminars had excellent attendance. This year’s event was enjoyed by a huge crowd – and conference organizers anticipate next year’s will be even larger, as the event returns to Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, May 20-22, 2024.
|
As education is a key component of this premier trade show, organizers will be looking to further enhance the business programs for 2024, attracting even more attendees seeking learning opportunities not easily found elsewhere.
Participating associations also include Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, Mid-Atlantic Petroleum Dealers Association, Empire State Energy Association and the New York State Energy Coalition
The EEE would not be successful without the enormous sponsorship support it receives. Thank you to all of this year's sponsors, OESP members who assisted with the association's booth and to the 2023 sponsors:

2023 Dave Nelsen Scholarship Recipients
|
|
The winners of the 2023 Dave Nelsen Scholarships were announced at the EEE Conference.
This scholarship was established in 1999 as a meaningful way to remember and recognize the commitment to education made by OESP member Dave Nelsen. The scholarship is awarded to students who are currently attending or planning to attend a technical college or trade school with plans to pursue a career in the oil and energy industry.
“We are extremely proud of the 2023 Dave Nelsen Scholarship recipients,” OESP President Scott Vadino said. “These individuals are the best of the best applicants and we are confident that they will continue the legacy of Dave Nelsen.”
“We are very thankful to our corporate, association and OESP chapter sponsors, who, along with OESP, co-sponsor the scholarships each year,” Vadino added.
“Our company is proud to be able to offer educational assistance to young people entering our industry,” added Fred Hunt, Director of Sales & Marketing of R.W. Beckett, which supports the scholarships each year. “A career in the HVAC industry will offer a wealth of opportunities for these fine scholarship recipients.”
The 2023 Dave Nelsen Scholarship winners are:
-
Jayce Ables – Plans to attend Bevill State Community College and resides in Hackleburg, AL. This scholarship was sponsored by Schwanger Bros. Heating Oil and Propane.
-
James Quinn – Plans to attend Entech and resides in Gales Ferry, CT. This scholarship was co-sponsored by Carlin and New Haven Chapter.
-
Johanna Rodriguez – Applying to MTTI/New England Tech/NETTS and resides in Manville, RI. This scholarship was sponsored by Pompetti Oil.
-
Mason Starkel – Plans to attend Entech and resides in Vernon, CT. This scholarship was co-sponsored by Pompetti Oil and Mid Atlantic Chapter.
-
Edward Urena – Plans to attend NYC College of Technology and resides in the Bronx, NY. This scholarship was sponsored by Advanced Fuel Solutions.
The OESP scholarship committee reviewed submissions from an exceptional number of impressive candidates this year and thank all those who submitted applications, said Angel Gonzalez, who coordinates the scholarship event each year.

|
As part of the event, Dennis Silvestri was awarded this year's Dan Holohan Grant, shown here being accepted by George McQueeney of the New Haven Chapter.. The award was created for an instructor at either an HVAC college or technical high school who wants to continue education or purchase tools or books for their classroom.
“I am very thankful to OESP for this grant,” Silvestri said. “It will be used to provide Entech’s HVACR students tablets or laptops, allowing them the opportunity to do their required EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification testing online. They will then receive immediate feedback on their test results as soon as they have completed the test. This grant money will provide an amazing opportunity to pass the certification exam as quickly as possible and progress in their career. This will make a huge difference for my students.”

The Annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Outing was a Huge Success!
|
|
The Annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Outing, led once again by George Fantacone, was an outstanding success. As in years’ past, the outing raised more than $20,000 for the scholarship fund which awards thousands of dollars in tuition money to deserving students each year. Since the fund's inception in 1999, more than $300,000 has been raised.
More than 100 golfers came together for a beautiful day of golf and fun. Congratulations to George and the entire association for an outstanding event!

Bucks Mont/Delaware Valley
|
|
The Bucks Mont and Delaware Valley Chapters held a joint tech night held at the American Legion Post 10 in Ft Washington, Pa.
Bob Kinkade of BJ Terroni spoke about the importance of cleaning the boiler system before installing new boilers. Bob also discussed new products that are offered for refrigerant line sets and fittings. Both products had the attention of the 55 techs, sales staff and owners that attended the meeting.
|
|
We would like to thank all who supported coming out for the night. Matt Deibert, Program Manager for The Electrical Association of Philadelphia took time out to see how OESP chapters run the local chapter tech nights. Nick Ciasullo of Avco supplies who sits on the Advisory Board for the Montgomery County Eastern Center for the Arts and Technology school set up for students to come out to the tech night and receive extra credits.
We had 12 students plus 3 that are employees with D. E. Duffey and sons as apprentices.
Thanks to all for coming out.

Pocono/Lehigh Joint Meeting
|
|
The Pocono and Lehigh Valley Chapters held a Joint Tech Meeting at Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder Fire Co. in Saylorsburg, PA. More than 35 Techs came out to learn about the advantages and challenges of increased blending of Biodiesel into heating oil tanks.
Bob O'Brien, Education Director for NORA, provided more than an hour and a half of instruction on Biodiesel as a drop in replacement fuel to help heating oil companies lower the carbon footprint in delivered fuels. With field techs in mind, Bob provided tips to equipment set up and trouble free operation.
It was an informative meeting for all!

|
Westchester Chapter Meeting
|
|
The Westchester chapter held its last meeting before the summer season.
The guest speaker for the evening was Bob O’Brien of NORA who is trying to visit each chapter and update them on B100 and their testing, and provide educational content to improve the quality of the service technician.
He also discussed oil tanks and oil pumps at great length and how the new fuels might affect their performance. He informed our members of the tax credits available through the inflation reduction act and the testing they are doing to make sure the new fuels are compatible and perform well for our customers.
|
|
The roundtable discussion was a presentation by five different members, who discussed their occupations, explaining what they do on a day-to-day basis, so the students in attendance could understand and learn the opportunities within our industry to include owners, oil drivers, representatives, and factory support personnel, as well as our wholesale community. The discussion was beneficial to the students as it showed them that there is more to our industry than just a technician.
We also had the pleasure of celebrating our Hugh McKee award winner, Brendan Grace of Beckett, and were fortunate to be awarded a certificate of appreciation from Saunders high school for all our members' hard work and support of their program.
Enjoy the summer!

Message from the Executive Director
|
It was wonderful to see so many of you at another successful Eastern Energy Expo that took place last month at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, NJ. I truly enjoyed spending time with you and watching your continued dedication in running three days of education classes, a fantastic awards banquet and your participation in the fundraiser for the Dave Nelsen Scholarship.
I would like to thank the volunteers who worked the OESP membership booth with us – you were invaluable in our membership recruiting and spreading the word about the value of OESP.
You displayed our badge ribbons and wore your OESP shirts with pride and we were thrilled with your participation.
The annual OESP Awards banquet recognized OESP members who have given countless hours of their time to the industry. Once again, kudos to our awards committee led by Matt Spink in pulling off a great evening. Congratulations to all the deserving winners.
The Dave Nelsen Scholarship awards were presented to five deserving students pursuing a career in the energy services industry. We would like to thank our generous sponsors for their support of this worthy cause: Schwanger Bros. Heating Oil and Propane, Pompetti Oil, Carlin, Advanced Fuel Solutions, the New Haven chapter, and the Mid Atlantic chapter.
By now, you have seen plenty from our great and generous advertisers. Taco, R.W. Beckett, Suntec Industries, Carlin/Hyrdolevel, General Filters, Sid Harvey, Roth, Weil-McLain, Energy Kinetics and F.W. Webb. You will see their logos at the top of this issue and you’ll see OESP happily promote them at every turn.
While many of the local OESP chapters will be taking a well-deserved break for the summer months, it will be bustling at OESP headquarters in New Jersey.
We will be planning the fall Oil Heat Retreat. It will be held at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs, NY, September 21-24. We expect a record turnout as we get ready for one of the best events of the year. Come join us for some fun – maybe a horse race, or a great dinner in town.
On behalf of Jonathan Jaffe, Meredith Levy, Andrea Klimkowski and the rest of your OESP management team, it continues to be a pleasure to serve you. OESP is known for its mission of education and service. We are happy to be a part of that. Have a terrific summer.
