Teach us to number our days and apply our hearts to wisdom. Psalm 90
The transition from one calendar year to the next is a natural opportunity to reflect on what has occurred in former days and to dream of what might unfold in future ones. Despite moments of doubts, fears, and grief that accompanied much of 2020, does not a mental year-end inventory confirm that God was ever-present, faithful, and active in our lives and that of our congregations?
As we step into 2021 – still with challenges before us – let us take heart from the ways God was able to work in and through us in 2020. Recognizing our efforts were (and are) not in vain, may we trust that God will continue to work wonders. Continuing in this pilgrimage together, may God’s peace, joy, and hope continue to be revealed to us; and may our efforts enable that peace, joy, and hope to shine brightly for a weary world.
Robert A. Hobby,
ALCM President-Elect

CrossAccent
The fall-winter 2020 issue of CrossAccent has entered production and will be mailed this month. The theme, “Practicing the Craft of Composition,” includes essays that address theoretical, historical, aesthetic, liturgical, and practical topics—from the influence of plainsong in the music of Healey Willan to a short primer on composing descants. Whether you are a musician who practices the compositions of others, a pastor or lay leader who composes sermons or prayer intercessions, or a composer yourself, hopefully the contributors’ collective wisdom offers a motive, phrase, or idea that helps nurture and sustain a sense of “craft” during these uncertain and challenging times.
