Have fun and be safe this Homecoming

Tips to celebrate safely:

  • If you choose to drink alcohol, plan ahead! Remember to eat a substantial meal beforehand. Select a number of drinks and only have that amount to help you set your own limit and stay within it.

  • Stay with a trusted group of friends and keep an eye out for one another.

  • Don't forget to drink water! Stick to 1–2 standard alcoholic drinks an hour and alternate them with water.

Extended Campus Observation Room (COR) hours

The COR is a confidential, non-judgmental and voluntary space for students who have had too much to drink.

Extended hours this weekend:

Sat Oct 17 at 6 pm – 7 am on Sun Oct 18

Upcoming no-guest weekends in residence

Please note that guests are not permitted in residence during the following periods:

  • Thursday, October 15 – Monday, October 19
  • Thursday, October 22 – Monday, October 26
  • Thursday, October 29 – Monday, November 2

Who counts as a guest?

A guest is defined as any non-resident of your residence building. Therefore, any non-resident of your residence who is visiting you, including those who live in a different Queen’s residence building (whether signed in under your name or not), will be considered your guest.

You can review section 3.10 in your Residence Contract for more information.

Conduct reminders for Homecoming celebrations in residence

If you are celebrating Homecoming, please remember these key requirements in your Residence Contract that are intended to keep everyone safe:

  • If you are of age, you can only drink alcohol in your room.
  • Safe consumption practices matter. Drinking games of any kind, including with water, are not permitted.
  • Possessing and displaying items that promote excessive, rapid, or otherwise unsafe alcohol or cannabis consumption (such as funnels, trophy walls, or wizard staffs) are also prohibited.
  • Alcohol in glass bottles (including beer bottles) is not allowed in or around residence as broken glass bottles pose safety risks.
  • Cannabis cannot be smoked in residence or on Queen's property.
  • Attending or hosting gatherings that impact the community and/or hinder an individual's ability to enjoy residence is a conduct violation.

Find more information about alcohol and cannabis expectations in your Residence Contract (sections 4.10.3 and 4.10.4).

UDSI is in effect

Key dates

  • The City of Kingston will enact the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) from Thursday, October 15, at 12 am midnight through Sunday, November 1, at 12 pm noon.
  • Gord Downie Pier and Breakwater Beach will be closed to the public each night from 8 pm to 6 am during the following periods: October 17–19, October 24–26, and October 31 – November 2.

During the UDSI period, Kingston Police and City bylaw officers will increase enforcement in the University District, particularly around large gatherings, nuisance parties, excessive noise, open alcohol and unsafe behaviour.

Be aware of increased enforcement

The UDSI initiative is city-wide and includes areas outside of residence buildings on campus. Large gatherings outside residence buildings may violate bylaws and be subject to fines, a court summons, and/or non-academic sanctions under the Queen's Student Code of Conduct.
