SBE Adopts Resolution in Support of Chronic Absenteeism and Trauma Supports

SBE recently adopted a resolution initiated by Student Board Member, Autymn Wilde. The Board passed the resolution at the September Board Meeting in Yakima. It encourages support for students who experience chronic absenteeism due to unavoidable circumstances.

"I drafted the resolution, which the Board adopted on September 12, 2019, for every single child who experiences chronic absenteeism due to unavoidable circumstances and/or trauma, so that they have a structured, transparent, and accommodating experience once they return to school," Wilde wrote.

Now available in Somali: Fact Sheet for Families about the Washington State Science Learning Standards

What information is most important for parents to know to support their students in science classes?

One of our partners, Ready Washington, asked Spanish-speaking middle school parents in Northshore School District and they co-designed a fact sheet! 

The fact sheet is now available in Somali, as well as English and Spanish: check it out/download here .
Funds available to explore bilingual high school teacher academy (courtesy of the Professional Educator Standards Board)

Mini grants are now available for schools interested in starting a bilingual focused high school teaching academy. The purpose of the Recruiting Washington Teachers – Bilingual Educators Initiative (RWT–BEI) teacher academy is to recruit, prepare, and mentor bilingual high school students to become future bilingual teachers and counselors in the state of Washington. 

These $10,000 grants are available to public school districts and tribal compact schools in Washington. Funds will be used for program planning, including to visit established sites and participate in professional development.
