' Looking back at SummerStage 2023'

It was an amazing summer with No Strings Theatre's 'SummerStage2023' which featured 3 events - The Storyteller by Kathleen Mills, Carmen by Georges Bizet, and Opera Brew HaHa, an opera pub at the Granite Brewery. The last 2 events were in collaboration with William Shookhoff's 'Opera by Request'.

Supporting and nurturing our Emerging Artists is essential for No Strings Theatre. I thank all of you who continue to provide your support by attending, donating, or sharing these events. See more below....

Next Summer, NST has already announced Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). Auditions will be in the Spring of 2024.

Indeed, it was thrilling to witness our Emerging Artists delivering an extraordinary performance that left everyone including the YPT staff members in awe.

The 5 shows were created, directed, managed, and performed by New Generation Emerging Artists. It has been nominated for two 2023 Broadway World Toronto Awards: one for Best New Play or Musical and one for Kathleen Mills, Best Performer in a Musical.

Bizet's Carmen is a classic opera that demands a balanced approach to both the musical and dramatic elements. With William Shookhoff's musical prowess and Gregory Finney's directorial vision to bring this into a 1930's era, the production struck the perfect balance. It was a powerful and enthralling experience for the audience.

Presented as a Young Artists Training Programs (YAP), the cast (emerging to professional) were mentored with masterclasses by industry professionals, such as Gregory Finney (Director), myself (Artist-Mentor), Ernesto Ramirez, Julie Nesrallah and Maria Whitehead (Guest Instructors). A small children’s chorus was also involved.

Thank you for supporting our 2023 SummerStage Season!

Without you, we would not have been able to:

• Produce a New Generation Artist's show at the YPT
• Perform 6 shows of George Bizet's 'Carmen'
• Received glorious reviews for our summer shows
• Be nominated for 2 Broadway World Awards

We would not have been able to do any of this without you!

As you know, we are still not out of the 'COVID gate' and, for this reason, our audience levels have been low this summer. As a result, No Strings Theatre has a shortfall in its budget which, if not balanced, may jeopardize its ability to continue delivering its programs.

Despite these chaotic and tumultuous times, we have been able to create and deliver dynamic and innovative programming to support our emerging artists.

The community responded with enthusiasm and requests for future performances and are eagerly awaiting our 'SummerStage'2024 season which will feature:

1. NEW GENERATION ARTIST NEW MUSICAL (an exciting team - TBA!)
2. OPERA YAPs FULL OPERA W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the farm
3. LOCAL OPERA PUB - Opera BrewHaHa 2024 - featuring the summer casts.
4. AN OPERA EXCERPT - NEW! TBA

Your financial support will enable No Strings Theatre to continue to provide our Emerging Artists with much-needed opportunities to learn and grow, both as theatre performers and as members of a positive and supportive Toronto Arts community.

Our fundraising goal is $10,000 by December 31, 2023 (gifts of $25 or more are eligible for a tax receipt). Here's how you can help:
