MPESD Planning for the Future of Our Schools

Dear Mt. Pleasant Community,

At Mount Pleasant Elementary School District (MPESD), we remain committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities for all students while using our resources responsibly. As our community and student population continue to change, thoughtful planning is essential to meeting our schools' future needs.

Understanding Our Enrollment Trends

Over the past two decades, MPESD has experienced a significant decline in student enrollment. In 2008, our District served approximately 2,963 students, compared to approximately 1,430 students today—a reduction of more than 50%.

In response to declining enrollment, the District made changes to its school configuration in 2023. While our most recent demographic study projects that enrollment will begin to stabilize over the next five years, the number of students is expected to remain substantially below historical levels.

These trends highlight the importance of continuing to evaluate how we organize our schools, educational programs, and resources to best serve our students.

Planning for the Future Together

At the November 4, 2026, Board of Education meeting, I will recommend establishing a Superintendent's Advisory Committee to help review enrollment trends, school facilities, educational programs, and financial considerations as we plan for the future.

The Committee will help review available information, explore possible options, and provide input to inform recommendations to the Board of Education.

We recognize that conversations about the future of our schools may raise questions and concerns. No decisions regarding additional school consolidation or closure have been made. Our goal is to approach this work thoughtfully, transparently, and with opportunities for community participation.

Staying Informed and Engaged

We are committed to keeping families, staff, and community members informed throughout this process. Updates about the Committee, opportunities for participation, and next steps will be shared as they become available.

Families can also follow Board discussions through our District YouTube channel.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to our students and schools.

Sincerely,

Dr. Elida MacArthur

Superintendent
