Referendum basics - What you need to know

West Lafayette Community School Corporation has placed a referendum on the November 2026 ballot to offset a loss of revenue and preserve widely recognized excellence.

School revenue lost to tax reform;

Rate increase results in little change in the amount you pay

State legislation adopted in 2025 means that existing tax rates now generate less revenue for schools across Indiana, including West Lafayette. A voter-approved tax rate of 57.06 cents per $100 assessed valuation (up from 37 cents) would ensure West Lafayette schools’ ability to sustain existing staffing and education programming with a minimal cost to taxpayers. As the impact of the legislation takes effect, the school board is expected to phase in tax rate rate increases (not levying the full approved amount) starting in 2027 with gradual increases until 2031.This keeps the amount of property taxes you pay, and the amount of referendum revenue collected by the school corporation, stable.

Referendum funds are vital to the success of West Lafayette schools, representing almost 25% of the district’s budget. As of 2026, referendum funds pay for salaries and benefits of more than 50 teachers and are the source of expenditures in custodial/maintenance and transportation, including wages, salaries, benefits and equipment. About 65% of referendum funds go to expenditures for teachers while about 35% go to expenditures for operations.

Voices of West Lafayette

State Representative for House District 26

Chris Campbell

"I believe our community understands that strong public schools are essential to our children’s future. Every child deserves access to a high-quality public education, and no child should be left behind because of cuts to education funding.

Our schools need the resources, educators, and support necessary to meet the diverse needs of every student. Investing in public education is an investment in our children, our community, and our future. We must make sure that funding decisions never come at the expense of the students who need our schools the most."

Did You Know? Ballot language is misleading

Q: The ballot says taxes on an average priced home will increase by nearly a thousand dollars – is that true?

A: No. Your tax bill will not increase by $956/year. This language is required by the state to indicate the total amount of school tax from the referendum, including the amount approved by voters in 2010 and renewed in 2017 and 2023. Mandated ballot language assumes that the school district does not already have an operating referendum in place. But because West Lafayette schools already have a voter-approved referendum, and depending on the value of your home and your qualifications for tax relief, your taxes may decrease, stay the same, or increase by a few dollars each year compared to your 2026 actual school taxes paid.
